DEDICATION
To Shri K.N. Rao,
who ignited in me the light of Jyotia.
Jyotia is the art of seeing light, of guiding, of counseling based on the truth called the horoscope. Jyotia is the pathway to God through the mazes of intuitions and the brilliance of an organized science, like any other science. Jyotia is the fusion of the divine with the mundane, the metaphysical with the scientific methodology, a divine chorus of the music of the heavens and the dance of the stars. It is that divine ballet, Jyotia, which is at once both a divinity and science that we are presenting.

INTRODUCTION
I am pleased to present this fourteenth volume of Golden Keys to Jyotia . It is the usual eclectic array of articles on various topics.
Places Where Planets Die explores the concept of mrana kraka shtna found in Sanskrit texts concerning houses where planets are particularly ill-placed and can give very unfavorable results.
In the Third Part of Interest students will learn about the special significance of certain 10-degree segments of the Zodiac and the results planets can give when placed there.
Lunar Illumination illustrates the importance of interpreting a birth chart and planetary periods using the position of the Moon as an ascendant and how some facts of a persons life and the timing of events can only be seen from this perspective.
Teachers Pet teaches students how to recognize the elements of a birth chart that indicate the potential for good educational achievement and how to predict when this will occur.
Yatra Yearnings is an original research article about those astrological factors that are activated in a horoscope when individuals go on a spiritual pilgrimage.
O Brother, Where Art Though? is an article on the Jaimini system of Jyotia that instructs students on how the planet with the third highest degrees in a horoscope can be used to predict the birth of younger siblings, as well as other indications of the 3rd house.
Enjoy!

I was recently invited to be a presenter at a Jyotia conference organized at the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in pennsylvania and really looked forward to the opportunity to interact and talk shop with other astrologers, some coming from as far as India. Unfortunately for me, this only lasted two days before I tested positive for COvID and had to quarantine for the remainder of the conference.
I was, however, able to view the presentations of my fellow jyotiis online and among the first that I watched was one on the concept of mrana kraka sthna . This Sanskrit phrase means death signifying place and refers to a particular house where planets are said to become weak and dead-like, such that they are unable to give good effects. This is the theory at least. It is based on the notion that every planet has its significations, as do the houses, and that there are certain houses where particular planets are very uncomfortable and unable to function properly due to the conflict of the significations of the planets and the houses. In other words, planets die there due to the incompatibility between the planets inherent nature and that of the house.
Here are the mrana kraka sthnas for each graha as given in Sanskrit texts:
Sun | 12th house |
Moon | 8th house |
Mars | 7th house |
Mercury | 7th house |
Jupiter | 3rd house |
Saturn | 1st house |
Rhu | 9th house |
(Note: no mrana kraka sthna is given for Ketu.)
In researching this concept, I came across various rationales for the incompatibility between these grahas and houses. Representative of these are the following ones taken from an online astrological blog.
Sun is the King. It is our soul. It is a creative planet. But 12th house is the house of loss, renunciation. The last thing a king will want is to give away his kingdom and wealth. So, Sun is not happy in 12th house. It gives problems related to health, parents, profession etc.
Moon is the mind and emotions. It is all about our feelings. 8th house is the house of death. It is the house of occult knowledge, separation etc. Sensitive and soft Moon becomes very uncomfortable in this tough house. From the point of muhurta also chandra asthma is very inauspicious.
7th house is the house of marriage, sex and partnership. The natural significator for seventh house is Venus. Mars is a Warrior. It is an agni tattwa planet. So, when a military and aggressive planet is asked to contribute in love and romance it becomes very uncomfortable.
Mercury is the planet of learning, Logical expression etc. 7th house is the house of intimacy and romance. But Mercury is a neuter planet. It is neither male nor female. It is not completely mature tounderstand relationship. So, it does not have any role to play in the house of marriage. So, it becomes uncomfortable here.
3rd is the house of courage and activity. Mars is the significator of this house. Jupiter is the planet of learning, wisdom and spirituality. When he is asked to become aggressive and take weapon in hand, he becomes very uncomfortable.
Venus is the planet of love, romance, happiness in our life. It wants to live a luxurious life. But 6th house is the house of service, charity, disease etc. So, Venus becomes very agitated and uncomfortable here. It fails to give good result. The natives who have Venus in 6th house, generally suffers in relationship.
