Old heart of Nevada: ghost towns and mining camps of Elko County: summary, description and annotation

Elko County is rich in historic sites, many of them hitherto uncharted and some verging on disappearing. Now, for the first time, one book identifies and locates the ghost towns and old mining camps of Elko County and recounts their colorful histories. Following a guidebook format, the author divides the county into five easily accessible regions, then lists the historic sites within each region and provide directions to reach them. A history of each site as well as a description of its extant structures and their present condition is included. The result is a lively compilation of local history and mining and ranching lore that records the colorful and dramatic past of Nevadas northeast corner - its pioneers and prospectors, its towns and mines, its outlaws, ranchers, merchants, mining concerns, and civic leaders. The book offers never before available information about the old heart of Nevada and the people who settled there. It will be of enduring value to tourists and weekend explorers, historic preservationists, and all those interested in the history and artifacts of this important and colorful region

Preface
When I started researching this book in 1986 1 had not envisioned the depth and breadth of the undertaking. Frequently, while I was working on the project, I thought I had finally finished the research and was ready to begin writing, only to find additional sources of information. The writing phase entailed transforming well over 1,000 pages of notes into an organized, readable format. Finishing the task took eight years. Of all the books I have written, this one has been the most challenging, because of its huge scope. It initially covered almost 300 historic sites, ghost towns, stage stations, railroad towns, ranches, mining camps, and forts, but the size of the volume was unacceptable to the publisher. I have thus pared it down so that it includes only a history of Elko County's ghost towns and mining camps. While people still live in some of the towns this book covers, these sites are included because they satisfy the definition of a ghost town: a shadowy semblance of a former self. The many stage stations, railroad stops, ranches, valleys, and other historical sites beyond the scope of this book will be discussed in a later volume.
Traveling the almost 15,000 miles it took to reach and every site mentioned in the book was an altogether enjoyable experience. At times, Elko County's beauty overwhelmed my camper's heart. It wasn't until I moved to Elko that I was able to truly enjoy all the wonders the county has to offer.
I have tried to present as accurate a history as possible of each site in Elko County. Despite the intense scrutiny that the manuscript has undergone by myself and local history buffs, errors may be present. I ask any reader who comes across questionable information to contact the author so that corrections can be made in future editions.

Many historical sites in Elko County have been degraded over the years. I have witnessed much of this inexcusable vandalism firsthand. Buildings have been destroyed by people trying to find out if there is anything inside their walls. Foundations and sites have been ruined by overzealous bottle hunters. Anyone who witnesses such vandalism should let the proper authorities know about it. I hope that my children will have the opportunity to enjoy the historic sites of this county as I have, but unless local residents, visitors, and federal agencies show some respect, there will be nothing left to see.
