Chapter 1.
Whats taking Mitch so long? Im thirsty. White and green strobe lights flashed through the club, and the pop music buoyed my dance moves. Yeah, I was spinningjust graduated high school, new boyfriend. Life rocked. One pulse-thumping song rolled into another.
The dryness in my throat worsened like Id drunk sand in Austin in the summer during a wildfire after running five miles. I backed away from my friends and pointed to the bar. If Mitch was going to take forever, Id get my own drink.
The club lights morphed burnt orange and glowed in the shape of longhorns. The hometown college crowd roared their approval and made Hook Em Horns signs with their hands, demonstrating their school pride. Id be attending Southwestern, so I curved my index finger into a rebellious pirate hook.
My hook caught a tall guy who moved in front of me.
He checked me out from head to toe, in a charming way with a smile, then locked his gaze on my eyes. Youre a great dancer.
Nice compliment. I returned his smile and let my finger uncurl. Holding eye contact, I said, Thanks.
Want to dance? With me? His voice was deep and smooth with invitation like a bad boy behind the bleachers.
He intrigued me.
A green spotlight slashed through the darkness, allowing me a glimpse of the guys face. Handsome, but I didnt recognize him. He wasnt one of the celebrating graduates, and he hadnt attended my high school. I wouldve remembered him by his build alone.
Swimmer? Runner? I didnt know, but hed been power lifting to get in shape for this club, for this moment, for our meeting, and I appreciated his efforts. I could barely make out his features in the dark Sixth Street club, but I made out enough to tease my senses. Add to that his tempting voice. Whew.
Cant. A stab of regret jabbed my heart as the words left my mouth, and I shrugged one shoulder. Im with someone. My boyfriends getting me a drink. I didnt know why I told him all that. Maybe because something about him was drawing me in, and sharing the personal details put distance between us.
Mitch was all about me. Hed be annoyed if he even saw me talking to this guy, which would lead to an argument, which would result in a pall on my awesome night. I looked around for Mitch again. The club was a blur of bodies, and I couldnt easily spot his sandy hair, though he was tall. Not as tall as this guy, but tall enough to usually find in a crowd. I caught sight of our cheer captain, quarterback, the math club presidentno Mitch.
Mitchs disappearance was like prom night all over again. Hed disappeared that evening for thirty minutes while Id danced with my friends. Then hed had the nerve to complain I hadnt been attentive enough to him.
The pop song switched midstream to one of my new favorites. I swayed my hips and shoulders. How could I not? This song was epic. Motion was irresistible.
His gaze traveled over my body before once again finding my eyes. Sure you wont dance with me?
You go, dude. Go after what you want. I dipped my chin while keeping my gaze on his. Cant.
He winked. Got it. He placed his palm over his chest. Heartbroken. But got it.
He walked away, and I missed him at once. His flirting was fun. Would dancing with him really have hurt anyone? This guy whod smelled like beachy cologne and a fresh shower and probably knew how to bring a girl a cup of water. If Mitch cared about me, hed be by my side. My dancing with another guy wouldve served him right.
I headed toward the bar. A green overhead light flashed across a corner table, landing on sandy hair. White and brown striped shirt. Definitely Mitch. Why was he sitting? Where was my drink? My poor throat.
Mitch leaned toward his companion. The strobe light revealed a girl. Dark brown hair. Long face.
My feet carried me in his direction. Two bright yellow slushy drinks sat on the table in front of them. Lemonade with raspberries and mint leaves stuck to the rim.
Id asked for water.
Right guy. Wrong drink.
Frost orange lipstick smeared over one of the rims. I stared hard at the imprint and raised my gaze to my boyfriend.
Mitch bent his head and kissed the girl with the espresso hair and frosted orange lips.
Whoa.
I froze like a living statue in the park. My eyes widened, heart thumped, and angry heat flushed my face. I was the outsider looking in, watching my love life dissipate into the bright neon green lights.
The girl posing like a suckerfish under my boyfriends mouth was Martina Galindez. B-team on the dance squad. Shed wanted to jump a level and take my dance captain spot, but shed failed. Fond of frost lipsticks and evidently my boyfriend Mitch.
Thats your
I registered the cut off question as coming from the guy whod asked me to dance. The sympathy in his tone was new. He stood behind me and his words halted at Mitchs obvious and public betrayal.
Plan Mitch was falling through the dance floor. MitchMitch came from another hill country ranching family. We were both going to attend local universities in the fall. We had similar goals for the future.
My brain processed how right we were for one another as I stood there stuck to the sticky floor, watching him hold and kiss another girl. My heart thumped with disappointment and my lungs ached with each ragged inhale. I knew I should feel shattered. Instead I was adrift yet unable to move away.
Mitchs tongue probed Martinas mouth in front of all our friends. How could he? How dare he?
My anger started in my toes, which Id crammed into pretty stilettoes, rose to my amethyst stud earrings, and bounced around in my brain like one of the pong games my brother Felix played. Mitch had to cheat in front of half our classmates?
His behavior was more than sly. His actions were humiliating, insulting, and painful. If he wanted a girlfriend whod roll up and crawl away, he should have chosen a girl without four brothers.
The cheaters smooches grew harder and sloppier.
They were stray dogs humping in my yard, and they needed the water hose turned on them to send them.
I picked up the lemonade slushy and aimed for Mitchs handsome, disloyal face.
