The Early Years

Carrie Frances Fisher was brought into this worldon October 21, 1956, in Burbank, California. Her father was singerEddie Fisher, and her mother was actress Debbie Reynolds. Bothparents were very famous at the time of her birth. Carrie recalledher birth being all about her parents, instead of her. She oncesaid that her mother passed out from the anesthesia she was givingfor labor pains. They didn't have epidurals back then. Debbie was avery attractive woman, and Carrie says that when her mother passedout, people probably ran to watch her sleep in awe. Then sherecalls what it was like with her father in the room. Eddie was atalented singer that made all the girls swoon. He passed out fromwitnessing Carrie's head crowning during the birth. She assumesthat all the nurses ran to comfort and nurture Eddie. She thenfeels that because of everyone swooning over her father and mother,no one was there to worry about the baby. She has said many timesshe felt not getting attention at her birth was the start of herneed to prove herself. She has always referred to herself as a trueproduct of Hollywood inbreeding. When two famous celebrities gettogether and mate, the result is someone like CarrieFisher.

When Carrie was born, shewas the first of two children between Eddie and Debbie. Her brotherTodd was born a year or so later. Eddie Fisher was coming ofJewish-Russian descent and Debbie Reynolds was of Protestant,Scots-Irish, and English decent. With Eddie being a Jewish singerand Debbie being a Protestant actress, one could easily say thatthey were complete opposites of each other. Sometimes oppositesdon't always attract. Carrie was two when her father left hermother behind to pursue a relationship with Elizabeth Taylor. Atthe time, the news of a divorce between America's sweetest couplewas devastating news to the fans. It had the same impact on fansthen that the divorce between Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt hadwhen he left for Angelina Jolie.

Debbie completely understoodwhy Eddie wanted to be with Elizabeth Taylor. She was raw, hadsexual power; whereas, Debbie was the girl next door and didn'tlive her life in the sexual spotlight. Eddie wasn't the onlyhusband to leave Debbie for a more sexual woman. In fact, all threehusbands, that she would have throughout her life, left her forthat reason. She had told Carrie, later in life, that every husbandsaid she wasn't a passionate woman. She didn't care, though. Shepreferred to put her time and energy to her career and her childrenover keeping her husband. Eddie got what was coming to him in theend. Elizabeth Taylor would later leave him to marry RichardBurton. Karma was giving Eddie a taste of his own medicine. Hewould then marry actress Connie Stevens. Connie gave Eddie twodaughters, Carrie's half-sisters Joely and Tricia Leigh.

In 1960, Debbie marriedHarry Karl. Harry was the real father figure in Carrie's lifegrowing up. Eddie was never there for her as a parent and Debbie, and Harry were the ones who raised Carrie and Todd. Unfortunately,Debbie worked a lot and wasn't always home for her children. Carrieand Todd wanted their mother's attention more than anything whenshe was home. Carrie often slept on the floor next to her mother'sbed, and Todd slept on the couch across the room. Debbie slept alot because she worked all the time and was always tired. Thechildren took advantage of their mother's attention as much as theycould while growing up. Even when Carrie was able to go out andspend time with her mother, there was never any real private time.Fans constantly stopped them on the street for autographs, and itbothered Carrie a lot. She had come to terms with the fact that hermother belonged to the world as much she belonged to Carrie, butshe didn't like it at all. She often heard people say they thoughtshe probably thinks she's so great because of whom her mother was,but she didn't think that about herself. Her mother's fame made herdifferent, and she just wanted to be the same as everyoneelse.

Carrie withdrew intoherself as a child. She loved to read, and that is what she wasusually doing. Her family called her 'the bookworm,' and it wasn'tmeant as a compliment. She wanted to read so much so she wouldbecome smart. She felt she was never going to be as beautiful asher mother, so she decided to become the smart one. She also readto impress her father, Eddie, but he never seemed too impressedwith it. She enjoyed it and kept her mind off other things. Shebegan writing young too. She started writing at the age of twelve. What she said was a therapeutic method for her when she wasyounger. She wrote down anything she was feeling, and it kept herfrom hiding her emotions or becoming stressed. Good strategyto cope withdepression , anxiety and stress inlife .

Twelve was also the agethat she began following in her mother's footsteps. She appeared onher mother's show in Las Vegas. She made many appearances whilealso trying to attend school. She attended Beverly Hills HighSchool. She was only in school until the age of 15 because she feltshe had to drop out to follow her dreams. Her mother was starringin the hit Broadway revival, Irene . Carrie had received a part asa debutante and a singer. The role interfered with high school, soCarrie made the decision to drop out. She followed her motheraround on tour with the show until 1973. Debbie and Harry weregetting divorced and 17-year-old Carrie needed to get away andfocus on her career. She enrolled at London's Central School ofSpeech and Drama. It was an 18-month program. Upon finishing schoolin London, Carrie applied to Sarah Lawrence College in New York. She was accepted, and her plan was to study the art of theater andacting. Unfortunately, she only lasted a few months and dropped outto take a role in her first film debut.

Her film debut was as LornaKarpf in the 1975 comedy Shampoo . It wasn't a leading role, but it was a good start. The movie also starred Warren Beatty,Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, Lee Grant, and Jack Warden. The movieis based around a hairdresser, played by Beatty, who sleeps withall of his clients. He is taken down by the rich and powerfulhusband of one of his clients. Carrie only received the partbecause of who her mother was. When she auditioned with WarrenBeatty, he was eating while reading the lines and didn't take thewhole thing seriously. Carrie appreciated the role, but shewould've rather earned it. Her character was very promiscuous, andDebbie didn't like it at all. Beatty also tried to pursue19-year-old Carrie, but she turned him down every time. She was notgoing to start her career off as a notch on Beatty's bedpost. Herfame would come with the next film she would appear in. It wassci-fi flick written and directed by George Lucas.
