Introduction
Who in the English-speakingworld hasnt heard of the legend that is Robin Williams? An amazingman, Robin made lives better with his amazing movies and hisstand-up shows. He was a man that people looked up to, someone thatwas adored for his sense of humor and his sense of philanthropy. However, Robin Williams wasnt always the comedic genius that weall know and love him to be. In fact, Williams began his life incompletely normal way. In fact, he could have become just aboutanything but lucky for us all; he chose theatre and comedy as hisway of life.
Born with a silver spoon inhis mouth, Robin Williams was never the pretentious snob that manymay have thought he would be. Who really looks at the wealthy, those who are born with all the money they could ever need andthink that maybe they will help the world? I know that I dont.Much as I try to be open-minded and think the best of everyone, Ifeel that few of the rich truly want anything more than to stayrich. Sure they might help some people along the way, but money isthe root of everything.
With Robin Williams thatwas never the case. He was determined to do something for himselfwhether that meant he would have money throughout his life or not.The simple fact that he went into acting and comedy should tell youplenty about this amazing man who didnt care about anything somuch as he cared about putting a smile on someones face. In fact, many have even stated that the reason Williams became so involvedin philanthropy is that he often felt guilty for having so muchwhen other had so little.
There are many reasons tolook up to Robin Williams, but perhaps one of the most importantreasons is because of the way that he looked up to everyone aroundhim. The way that Robin Williams believed everyone in the world wasimportant and set about to make the world a better place in any andevery way that he could. Its something that I know I aspire to do.I would love to become even half the philanthropist that RobinWilliams was throughout his life and half the person that he waseven outside of it. He inspired more people than I could ever hopeto and thats something for all of us to aspire to.
Chapter I:Childhood
Born July 21 st , 1951, Robin McLaurinWilliams came into this world at St. Lukes Hospital in Chicago,Illinois. The only child of Laurie McLaurin and Robert FitzgeraldWilliams, he did have two elder half-brothers. His mother had beena model in Mississippi and part-time actress while his father was,at the time, a senior executive at Ford Motor Company. RobinWilliams comes from a wealthy family. However, when Robins fatherwas a teenager, his family business went bankrupt. So he ended upworking in a cold mine to make a living. Later, Robin Williamsfather served in the NAVY where he got almost killed by a Japaneseplane that crashed at his ship. Robin Williams father was known ascold and rigid man, without much sense of humor emotionallyunavailable to serve the role as a father.
Laurie McLaurin was a youngsouthern beauty. Robert Williams was 46 years old when Robin wasborn. Laurie had 16-year age difference from Robert Williams.During this time, in order to have a successfully business, youhave to travel and move around a lot. As Robin Williams father wason the road, his mother was deeply involved in society functionswhile she was doing her occasional work as a model. So Robin had togrow up in a big mansion alone or without much of his family. As aresult of this loneliness, he developed good imagination. Hestarted creating characters and conversations in the head, talkingback and forth to himself. Thats how he spent most of hischildhood. He dreamed of having more friends. Since he did not haveany, he created imaginary friends by giving them unique voices. Hespent a lot of time playing with his dog Duke.
As a child, Williams wasquiet which is generally believed to be because he was a victim ofbullying as a result of his weight. The school years of Robin, especially when he was in 6 th grade, were the mostdifficult moments of his life. He would go home crying, becauseeveryone made fun of him. Most of the kids in the public schoolwanted to prove that they were bigger than him. As a result theywere throwing him into walls. Robin was actually afraid of going toschool, because as soon as he got at the door, kids would starttorture him.
Bullying is a result ofattacking the weakest. It was caused for lack of bond or connectionwith the parents. If the child has a secure bond with the parents, they are less likely to be bullied at school. If the child does nothave strong bond with the parents, its like separating from theherd. Those are the ones who get picked off by the human predators. So the connection / bond between the parents and the child providea shield against bullies. This is something Robin Williams did nothave.
Though he did get involvedin humor at an early age it was only as a way to make his motherlaugh and a way to increase the level of attention he received fromher. The comedy found its way to connect Robin with his mother. Heneeded her attention and approval. Thats how it allstarted.
Robin Williams thenrealized that he has to be more than just himself. He had to bealways Robin + good looking, or Robin + rich, or Robin + funny. Hecould not be just Robin without any extra veneer. The cake alwayshad to have a cherry on top of it, otherwise would not work. Inorder to serve such dysfunction in my opinion, some key figuresin society do plastic surgeries and cosmetics to look better, tohave better sex appeal, to be funny in order to get attention orget connection, etc.
Robin had two olderbrothers. Still, there was nobody to play around with. He did notget to see his brothers until he got 10. Robin Williams olderbrothers always stole the money from his piggy bank.
In school, he was quite shyand kept to himself. He changed schools, so Robin was always thenew guy. That, however, was all to change when he reached highschool and discovered his passion, the drama department.
Before his big revelationRobin moved with his family twice. They first moved to Detroit, MIwhen he was only 12-years-old and still in middle school. Duringthis time he was often cared for by the family maid as his parentswere frequently away and too busy to take care of him themselves. This too changed when he turned 16 and his father moved the familyagain, this time to California.
