Blonde and busty like her predecessor,Marilyn Monroe, Jayne made an entire career out of celebrating hersexuality. She owned her sexual power, as opposed to relying on aman for it. Jayne was one of the first of her kind regarding beingsexually liberated in an era that still saw certain things as beingtaboo. She also proved her acting ability in movies andplays.

Her love of the color pinkwas very well known, and Jayne flaunted it. From her famous pinkadorned three-story Spanish style house, which was known as the"pink palace," to the Pink Cadillac she drove, Jayne knew how tomake a statement. Jayne was also one of the very few sex symbols ofher time who had a child when she started her career. She was oftenoutspoken and notorious for her Hollywood stunts and wardrobe"mishaps" that always seemed to give her attention from the press.Jayne loved to play with America's love-hate relationship with sex.She fought to keep her image from fading right up until the endwhen she was in the infamous car accident that took her life. Jaynelived on through her daughter, actress, Mariska Hargitay. Jayne wascharming, funny and driven. Her success is proof to every womanthat you can do it all.

Background and EarlyLife

Jayne Mansfield was born inBryn Mawr Pennsylvania in 1933. Verne Jayne Palmer was her mother.She had grown-up in Pennsylvania in a wealthy industrialist family.Her father, Herbert William Palmer was descended from Germanimmigrants. He was a successful attorney. Not long after Jayne wasborn, the family moved to Phillipsburg, New Jersey. Her fatherjoined the practice of Robert B. Moyer who later became thegovernor of the state of New Jersey. Verne and Herbert had areasonably happy marriage.

Verne and Herbert decidedJayne would be their only child. Verne had previously given birthto a baby who died prematurely, and she had to have a c- sectionperformed to give birth to Jayne. In these days, it was notrecommended to have children once this procedure has beencompleted. That was just fine with Verne and Herbert. They lovedtheir daughter immensely.

Sadly, Jaynes father diedof a heart attack when Jayne was just three years old. They weredriving in the family car, and Jayne was up front, sitting on hermother's lap as she witnessed her father dying. Jayne and hermother were devastated. Her father's death had an overwhelmingeffect on her. She would often go and visit him at the cemeterywhere she would cry and talk to him. She felt that no oneunderstood her the way her father had. She never got past thememory that haunted her; however, she knew she was lucky to havesurvived.

Her parents were a witnessof Jaynes desire to become a star at a very early age. Before thedeath of her father, he would take her to the movies to watchShirley Temple and her dancing. This adorable curly-haired talentmesmerized Jayne. Watching Shirley Temple dance inspired her totake dance lessons. When Jayne was twelve, she took ballroomdancing lessons so that she could entertain and learn how to fit inwith Dallas society. When Jane was five, she would sing to anyonewho would listen. She loved to entertain at family gatherings. WhenJane was six, she had the vocabulary of a twelve-year-old. She wasvery gifted.

Jayne had an enormouscollection of stuffed animals, which she displayed proudly on herbed. They would sometimes be her audience, as she would sing in herroom. Jayne was also very musical. She became a concert violinist.She even knew how to play the viola and the piano. When she wasseven, she would stand in the driveway and play the violin. Sheloved putting on a concert for the whole neighborhood.

After the death of Jayne'sfather, Verne became a teacher to support her daughter. For Jayne,her early memories of her father were her fondest. She would sit onhis lap, and he would stroke her long, curly hair. He would makeher feel safe. She felt safer when he was alive. It was alsoevident that from an early age, Jayne had a good heart. When Jaynehad found out that the family living down the street from her hadfallen on hard times, she did whatever she could do to help. Theirlittle girl did not have a winter coat, so Jayne gave this littlegirl her jacket. She was always kind to others.

In 1939, Jaynes mother,Verne married a man named, Harry Lawrence Peers. He was a travelingsales engineer from Fort Worth, Texas. They were married in St.Louis. They all moved to Dallas, Texas. At first, Jayne felt likeHarry was trying to replace her father, and she did not respondwell to her mother's new marriage or the move to Texas. Over time,things changed. Jayne took Harrys last name. Harry helped Jayne tofeel like she had a family again. Jayne grew to be quite fond ofhim, even though he could never replace her father. Harry was firmbut loving, and he believed in spending quality time as a family,and he gave that gift to Jayne. Harry, Verne, and Jayne would haveweekly family barbeques. Jayne would invite people and otherfamilies in the neighborhood to the cookouts. Jayne brought thattradition into her own family. Later on, when she was married, shewould have family barbeques. They would cook for the entire SanFrancisco Giants baseball team.

Jayne was an excellentstudent at Highland Park High School. She usually received highmarks. She also learned how to master four other languages. Shelearned French, Italian, German and Spanish. She spoke differentdialects fluently, and she boasted an IQ of 163. She was thesmartest dumb blonde-haired person in her class.

In 1950, When Jayne wasseventeen; she married her high school sweetheart, Paul JamesMansfield, and they married in secret. Later on, after they foundout that Jayne was pregnant, they had a big public ceremony, asJayne had always hoped. When baby Jayne Marie was born, Jaynejoined Paul at school, and she brought her baby with her toclasses.

Paul was called to duty inthe US army. Jayne joined him to live in Camp Gordon, Georgia. WhenPaul shipped out to Korea in 1952, Jayne returned to Dallas, Texas.She enrolled at Southern Methodist University to studyacting.
