Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge until these calamities be overpast. (Psalm 57:1) Anita Dittman was just a little girl when the winds of Nazism and Hitlers coming Holocaust began to blow through Germany. Raised by her Jewish mother, she came to believe that Jesus was her Messiah at eight years old. By the time she was ten, the war had begun. Suddenly Hella was racing down the street to meet me as I entered our block, panic and fear written all over her face. Her body shook visibly, and her face was contorted because she was about to break into tears. Curious people stared at Hella, but they kept moving, afraid to get involved. I sensed even before she spoke that disaster had struck our home. Mothers been taken! she gasped. Trapped in Hitlers Hell is the true account of Holocaust horror but also of Gods miraculous mercy on a young girl who spent her teenage years desperately fighting for survival yet learning to trust in the One she had come to love. In this inspirational story Anita tells her tale of miraculously survival during the terror of Hitlers reign when she was becoming a teen. First, her mother was picked up by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration campthen Anita. God protected her during forced labor in a concentration camp and He made a way for her to escape and be reunited with her mother. This is a story of hope, survival, and Gods miracles. Anita Dittman tells her powerful story of overcoming the horrors of Nazi work camps during World War II at groups across the United States in an effort to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive so we wont forget what sort of evil exists in the world. This updated edition includes a special authors note about how the world has changed since the first edition and how we need to continue to be diligent not to forget the atrocities against the Jews lest history repeats itself. Her message is to inspire good men to not sit idly by while dictators take control of governments and impose their will on the people.

S ince my arrival in America in 1946, it has been my dream and prayer to share with others the glorious miracles the Lord performed during my twelve and a half years of persecution under the Nazi regime. However, in the Lords timing, the book did not take shape until sometime in the winter of 1977, after I had reaffirmed my faith in Jesus Christ and renewed my total commitment to Him during one of Billy Grahams Crusades on TV.

I dedicate this book to the glory of God and with deepest gratitude in memory of my pastor and beloved friend the late Bishop Ernst Hornig of Germany, who through his perfect Christ-like example first led me into a living relationship with my Savior when I was twelve.

My sincere appreciation also goes to my dear friend Dr. H. Allan Talley of Hope Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis, whose care and concern for me have been a constant source of comfort and encouragement. He in turn introduced me to the talented young writer of this book, Jan Markell. Her friendship and her spiritual depth have had a powerful impact upon my life. May the testimonies on these pages awaken each reader to the full realization that Christ is alive today and that His miracles, love, and forgiveness are unlimited.

Anita Dittman

t his book is dedicated to my parents, Ben and Helga Markell. My fathers Jewish heritage gave me a passion to understand the truth of all things Jewish, including the Holocaust. He died a believer in 2001. My mother prayed me through many serious circumstances in life, including major illness. She was a Proverbs 31 woman who never gave up hope that her husband would become a believer and I would recover from these illnesses and serve the kingdom of God in full-time ministry. She died of cancer in 1987, much too soon. I so look forward to our heavenly reunion.

I ts a strange and sobering thought to ponder that none of us have any say about when or where we are born. I was delivered from my mothers womb just after the Second World War during a time of peace and prosperity in New Zealanda country that has never been invaded by an enemy.

How different my life would have been if I had been born in Europe just twenty years earlier.

My Jewish ancestors fled European anti-Semitism back in the late 1800s. Had they chosen to stay and hide in Poland until the persecution passed, my life would have been radically different. When I consider what it would have been like to experience firsthand the horror of the Holocaust, I shudder at the thought. Thats why books that tell of Jewish persecution in Nazi Germany are so meaningful to me.

Trapped in Hitlers Hell is more than just a gripping story. It is living history. Its a human experience of the Christian faith that induces empathy from the reader. I was so moved by its account that I sought out Jan Markell to say how its pages had affected me.

May God use this wonderful publication to remind us of the darkest of times in human history, to help us appreciate liberty, and to display the power of Christian faith in times of gross darkness.

L ike Ray Comfort, my Jewish ancestors fled a persecuted land more than a hundred years ago. The pogroms of Russia before the Russian Revolution were a mini-holocaust. Author Joel Rosenberg and I joke that our grandparents may have been under the hay of the same fleeing wagon, praying no Russian pitchfork would strike one of the kids.

Thankfully, my Lithuanian grandparents went straight to Ellis Island and never made a detour into Europe. They likely would not have come out alive.

People who do not know persecution dont reflect on such things, nor do their offspring. But if it is in your family history, you ponder it oftenyou never take freedom for granted.

About the time this book first came out decades ago, the Iranian Revolution was heating up. A mystery man by the name of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was coming out of the shadows and opposing the government of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran. U.S. president Jimmy Carter ignored the Shahs pleas for help, and Carters weakness emboldened the Iranians who sided with Khomeini.

Back in the late 1970s, I am not sure how many people realized a new war was brewing. That a second Holocaust was on the minds of the mullahs of Iran and the leaders of other Islamic strongholds. While no one back then could have envisioned airplanes flying into tall buildings and causing them to pancake down, killing nearly three thousand Americans, people should have been aware that new Hitlers were arising in the Islamic world, who would actually deny the Holocaust. The most outspoken in this century was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, who was voted out of office in 2013. His successor, Hassan Rouhani, has a softer tone but is still determined to wipe out the very memory of Israels existence. He is a cunning man who tweeted holiday greetings to the Jews during the fall feasts in 2013, yet wants their demise as much as Ahmadinejad.
