To my Mom, and James's grandmother: two very extraordinary women, who both gave us great lessons in life. They are always in our hearts until we meet again.
Their enquiry stood out from the usual half dozen that came through that day. James emailed that he and his girlfriend lived in Switzerland and were looking for a ghostwriter to tell their love story. He warned that it would contain sexual elements that many would find shocking, but that there would be many lessons to be learnt from it.
Dear Mr Crofts, if possible, I think that meeting up with us, seeing who we are, hearing us out, would not be a waste of time.
He told me they would be in London the following weekend and would be staying at The Dorchester in Park Lane. Curiosity got the better of me. Since I was going to be in Mayfair anyway, interviewing an African leader whose memoir I was ghosting, I suggested I pop into The Dorchester once I was finished.
The African leader had a busier schedule than expected and finding myself free in the middle of the day I sent James a text. He invited me to join them for lunch at Zumas, a famous Japanese restaurant in Knightsbridge. It seemed that fate was working to make this meeting both pleasant and convenient. Even if nothing came of the book it would be an interesting lunch and would pass the time until my African client was free once more.
The couple I found waiting for me at the bar with perfectly chilled glasses of white wine were nothing like I had expected. To start with they were both extremely good-looking, but there was not a hint of arrogance. They managed to be both reserved and charming at the same time, intent on making me feel comfortable in their company despite the very obvious fact that they were completely wrapped up in their adoration of one another.
Plate after plate of tiny, elegant delicacies were presented at the table by discreet waitresses and one chilled bottle of wine followed another as they slowly revealed their fable of true love.
It started with love at first sight when they were little more than children and was shattered a few years later by the realities of adult life and the expectations of their families. Just like Romeo and Juliet the young lovers were forced apart by circumstances but, unlike Shakespeares star-crossed lovers, these two had been given a second chance and they had turned it into something magical and extraordinary.
By the time the espressos were being served I was hooked and had agreed to fly out to Switzerland the following weekend with a tape machine. That was the start of a journey deep into the lives of a couple who together have discovered some of the most profound secrets of happiness. What follows is Pennys telling of the story.
Andrew Crofts
Penny! Penny! Penny!
I jumped up and ran to the steering wheel, pushing James out of the way. Gas on and tribord gear down, with a mighty churning of water the boat started to move backwards, away from the three sailing boats we were about to hit broadside.
Oh my God, Pen, Jamess face was still drained of all colour, you are the best! I totally panicked. Im so sorry I saw the boats coming towards us, with the wind Fuck!
No problem, Captain, I grinned, feeling really good about myself. I taught you how to handle two motors, but wind is tricky.
I couldnt get rid of the proud little smile I had on my face. Id got my mans beautiful ten-metre motorboat out of the port while he was freaking out. How good did that feel? I would say that James loves his boat nearly as much as he loves me. We have both been boat freaks since we were kids but I will always tease him that he is just a lake mariner and that I have a sea licence.
Once he had recovered from the shock and we were safely out on the lake, James took over the wheel again and I stretched out in the front with my book, totally naked apart from my G-string bathing suit. I was deep into my biography of Oona Chaplin and wasnt taking any notice of where we were heading. The boat is completely open with a comfortable zone in front to chill out and read and sunbathe. James and I prepare it every summer with such joy, bouncing around like kids. We fill up the fridge with some good Domaine dOtt ros wines and some whites. I have all my shampoos and cosmetics on board. Huge towels and deco cushions make it feel just like home.
The wind dropped as suddenly as it had arisen. The lake is so unpredictable, thirty minutes before we had the Penny, Penny crisis and now it was as smooth and calm as a mirror. James lowered the anchor just off a beach and I started preparing the sushi wed picked up on the way down to the port that morning. I took out a nice bottle of Pouilly Fum from the fridge and prepared us a picnic in the front, spreading everything out on the towels before settling down to enjoy the view.
What do you think is happening in those bushes? I asked, leaning forward to try and get a better look at the beach, my bum in the air. Why do they keep going back and forth like that?
I dont know, James replied, rummaging under the seat for a pair of binoculars.
I think I might swim over and find out whats happening, I said.
Youre not going into that forest, he said. And keep your head down or theyll see were watching.
I ducked down and took the binoculars from him. Two people came out of the undergrowth together and sat opposite each other on the sand, both cross-legged.
Honey, I said, would you light me a cigarette, please?
As I focused on the couple I saw they were both really fit men, obviously guys who spent a lot of time toning their bodies in the gym, a pair of Greek gods. Both of them were naked and both already had magnificent erections. I began to feel really hot. They leant towards each other, their lips meeting in a passionate French kiss. It was a beautiful scene with the clear green waters lapping between us, the white stones of the beach and the dark trees behind these two perfectly built men.
They started to masturbate each other as they continued to kiss and with the binoculars I could see every sun-kissed muscle moving in their fabulous arms and toned torsos.
Im not interested in watching this, James said, turning away for a couple of seconds before his eyes were inevitably drawn back to the scene. For me, on the other hand, this scene was exciting so illicit and so weird.
I took a long drag on my cigarette and continued to watch, staying as still as I could, like a hunter, crouched doggy style in wait for their prey. I could sense that James was looking at my ass in the G-string. I was now imagining the sort of sex these beautiful guys had been having together in the bushes and I needed to do something about the heat that was building inside me. James gently caressed my buttocks, his fingers lightly brushing between the cheeks and down over the lips of my pussy, making me tremble. A tiny moan of pleasure escaped me. I needed to have him in me as quickly as possible. Its not that gay sex interests me or that I would watch or enjoy it, but I had been taken by surprise and the forbidden feeling made it actually sexy, something that a hetero girl doesnt usually come across in daily life.
