Sino-Russian relations both present and past are a most absorbing object of study for specialists and laypeople alike, for seldom in human history can two countries so different have become neighbours. Moreover, the importance of these relations today for world politics and for all our futures is so immense that everyone should be informed about them to some degree. Present events cannot be well understood without a knowledge of the background from which they sprang, yet a short introductory history of Sino-Russian relations has until now not been available. It is to meet this need that the present book has been written.
Assuming no previous knowledge of the subject in my readers, I have attempted to produce something useful for anyone with an inclination to read history who approaches the topic for the first time. By contrast to existing histories, I have cut down on details about negotiations and border regions and included more information about relevant general developments and the evolution of policies in Russia and China. Only within this setting, it seems to me, can the minutiae of the relations between the two powers appear really comprehensible. For the same reason, it seemed advisable to commence with two chapters giving outline histories of China and Russia to the date of their first contacts, which can easily be skipped by those who do not need them.
I have tried to give readers a clear summary of what seem to me the most important facts to be taken into consideration in each historical epoch of Sino-Russian relations, and to this end, and because there is so much more published on the later periods than on the early, I have gone into relatively more detail about the early. But throughout, and increasingly towards modern times, huge historical background scenarios and complicated themes often have had to be compressed into a paragraph or a sentence. The inevitable over-simplifications seem justified, since the reader can easily turn to many books on these subjects and it is the perspective which it is important to establish here.
