ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Though close colleagues have been far too busy to help in the preparation of this book, there are still many people who are to be thanked for the assistance they have given. Librarians and archivists are, I now realize, wonderful people. Nameless many of them were to me, but their service was impeccable. I am indebted to them.

To the staffs of the Public Record Office (National Archive), the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, the Joint Services Staff College, the Tank Museum, Bovingdon, and the libraries of Exeter, Bristol and Southampton universities I offer thanks for their patience and cheerful efficiency. Nearer to home I have leant heavily on the expertise of the staff of The University of Plymouth Library (Exmouth campus). They never failed me nor lost their good humour. No matter how bizarre or ill-timed my requests, they always turned up trumps.

When not in libraries I worked in the best possible of environments, at home. To Sara, Katie and Jake, who put up with me and my generals for many a long month, and who grinned away with weary loyalty as I recounted yet another long-winded military anecdote I thought funny, I am deeply grateful.
