ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to acknowledge and thank the following, some of whom, although not mentioned in my story, have nevertheless made a massive contribution to my career or else been instrumental in the production of this book.
Sam Jackson for his expertise, patience and good humour in guiding me though the maze that is this, my first and which shall remain my only book.
Jennie Condell (Publisher) from Elliott and Thompson for her diligence, friendliness and great skill in putting it all together and to the many at E&T books who made it possible: Lorne Forsyth (Chairman), Olivia Bays (Director), Pippa Crane (Senior Editor) and Alison Menzies (PR).
And Carol, yet again, for proofreading everything, contributing much, and remembering even more.
Steve Abbott, manager since 2008, whose acquaintance with, and knowledge of, music across all genres is unmatched and who is brilliant at the big picture.
Emma Kerr, Head of Promotion at my publisher Boosey & Hawkes, whose wisdom and guidance in my professional life as a composer has been far greater than the job description suggests and who also read a draft of this publication; Senior Editor Jeremy Allen whose expertise in editing and producing my scores has been faultless in its detail; Head of Publishing James Eggleston; and last but by no means least, Managing Director Janis Susskind, an iconic name in music publishing, who engineered my signing to the company in 1995.
In life, one needs lawyers and accountants: Andrew Thompson, partner at Lee & Thompson has been my lawyer since 1995, with Mike Brooks dealing with the litigious matters that, alas, surfaced from time to time. Since my twenties I have been with accountancy firm Lubbock Fine, in particular the partners, Russell Rich and David Levy; the latter, one of the wisest men I have ever met, sadly died just before the completion of this book.
The six Finnish Adiemus singers are: Mervi Hiltunen, Anna-Mari Khr, Mia Simanainen, Nina Tapio, Rika Timonen and Sde Barling (ne Rissanen) who was the leader of the ensemble. We later added: Pirjo Aittomki, Merja Rajala, Hanna-Riikka Siitonen. And thanks to Irma Tapio who managed them for a while.
Id also like to express my gratitude to John Gibbons and his musician wife Rowena. John has many irons in many fires, including conducting the Worthing Symphony Orchestra. He came to enjoy my work, performed much of it and, with Rowena, promoted Requiem and Stella Natalis UK concert tours, where John and I shared the conducting.
Adiemus Colores: The Adiemus Singers were recorded at Finnvox Studios Helsinki and engineered by Mikko Oinonen. They were: Sde Barling (leader, alto); Mirjam Schulman, Hanna Tuomela, Anna-Mari Khr (sopranos); Pirjo Aittomki, Mia Simanainen, Mervi Hiltunen-Multamki (mezzo-sopranos); Pia Lnnqvist (alto); Tomas Takolander, Paavo Hykki (tenors); Sampo Haapaniemi, Pemo Ojala (basses).
The superb rhythm section for Colores comprised: John Parricelli (guitars), Ksenija Sidorova (accordion), Danny Evans (piano), Zands Duggan, Jody Jenkins (percussion) and Laurence Cottle (bass guitars).
Thank you to cellist, friend, Mintys godfather and Jodys best man Jonny Byers for fixing (contracting) many fantastic freelance ensembles for me in recent years: The Marylebone Camarata and La orquesta de colores among them.
The massed 1,000 voices on two movements of The Peacemakers included the Angmering Chorale, Ashtead Choral Society, Beckenham Chorale, Billingshurst Choral Society, Burgess Hill Choral Society, Camerata Chamber Choir Isle of Wight, Carshalton Choral Society and Holy Cross Choir, Gainsborough Choral Society, Havering Singers, Hook Choral Society, Leatherhead Choral Society, Leicester Philharmonic Choir, Redland Green Community Chorus, Choir of St James Church Finchampstead, and the Tyranno Chorus.
I am also indebted to my friend the judge, Paul Thomas QC, for, as a non-musician, reading the draft of this book to see if it made any sense, and to Welsh Government Minister Edwina Hart MBE for her continuing friendship and support.
And to my record companies: Patrick Lemanski (Head of Warner Classics UK) and Lee Daniel Woollard, who now look after my EMI catalogue, for producing the Voices CD box set and Still with the Music CD released in conjunction with this book; Mark Wilkinson (President of Deutsche Grammophon) and Christian Badzura (Executive Producer A&R) at DG, Berlin.
Apologies to anyone who feels slighted that they have been omitted. Put it down to a senior moment by an old (-ish) Welsh composer.
