Preface
These articles on bilingual education (BE) all have as a common objective trying to describe and explain bilingual education in order to predict the educational results of various policies imposed on linguistic minorities. Thus, the articles focus on theory and research rather than on the classroom perspective. The major point is that the research findings on bilingual education cannot be interpreted unless BE is interpreted as an intervening variable rather than as a causal factor. All of the articles share the viewpoint that explanatory factors of BE are to be found in the social relationship of the linguistic groups in contact, a view I am even more convinced of now than when I first proposed it in 1974.
