With this edition of Marc Ellis's A Year at the Catholic Worker, the Baylor University Press inaugurates a new series, "Literature and the Religious Spirit," intended to return to print important literary works of fiction, creative nonfiction, and spiritual autobiography by writers of faith. It is the fate of most literary works these days, both great and small, to eventually disappear from bookstore shelves; the result, of course, is that eventually even works by major writers and thinkers are effectively lost to critics, students, and the general reading public. But by reprinting such works, the Baylor University Press hopes to acquaint a new generation of readers with significant works of literature by major writers. Our editions are intended to be both bookstore- and classroom-friendly; each book will add to an authoritative text an introduction, an interview or interviews with the author, and a short bibliography of primary and secondary works to acquaint a new reader with the author's canon and major critical responses to it.
A Year at the Catholic Worker is an ideal book to launch "Literature and the Religious Spirit": the work was uniformly acclaimed when first published twenty-five years ago; it expertly recounts an important epoch in contemporary Christian

social history; and of course, most importantly, it traces important episodes in the development of the thought and social conscience of a major twentieth-century thinker. Marc Ellis has gone on from the writing of A Year at the Catholic Worker to become a significant voice in the post-Holocaust Jewish/Christian dialogue. He speaks nationally and internationally on the issues which arise from the facts of the Holocaust and the establishment of a Jewish state, and his booksamong them such works as Ending Auschwitz: The Future of Jewish and Christian Life; Toward a Jewish Theology of Liberation; Unholy Alliance: Religion and Atrocity in Our Time; Beyond Innocence and Redemption: Confronting the Holocaust and Israeli Power; and the recent O, Jerusalem!: The Contested Future of the Jewish Covenantchallenge Jews and Christians alike to rethink past and present atrocities and to live justly for the future. That Marc Ellis is now a member of the Baylor University faculty only adds to our excitement in launching "Literature and the Religious Spirit" with his first book. We hope you will find it stimulating reading and will look forward to future books in the series.

The author of this book is quite correct in the division he has made of the existing literature devoted to the Catholic Worker movement: books by sympathetic, intellectual observers, of one sort or another, or books by those whose entire lives have been very much part of a particular social and religious effort. His book provides, as he points out, a third alternativeand an important one. He is youngand so with a perspective of a new generation. The Catholic Worker movement is approaching its half century of life, and inevitably, its meaning must be assessed by the men and women of Marc Ellis' generation as well as by those of us whose hair is greying; or is all white. He is Jewishan outsider by ancestry to an experiment in action and faith that is, obviously, Catholic in its inspiring commitment. And he is honest, decent, thoughtful, sensitive, and clear-headedas well as a strong, lucid writer; and so, his observations, inevitably and properly, will influence, even persuade the readers who come upon this book.
