ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Part 1: Terrorism & Immigration
Chapter 1: ISIS comes to Canada, via the US border
It was Canadian Forces appreciation night at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta. The crowds had filed into the stadium that cool evening in early autumn to watch their hometown Eskimos take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, as both teams vied for a remaining playoff spot. More than 30,000 people were in attendance that evening, enjoying the game and oblivious to the wannabe ISIS terrorist trying to wage war just steps outside the stadium.
Edmonton Police officer Const. Mike Chernyk was on duty that night, and had helped set up the barricade that separated vehicles from the crowd of pedestrians. Suddenly, without notice, and at a high speed, a male driving a white Chevy Malibu crashed through the traffic barricades, said Edmonton Police Services Chief Rod Knecht at a 3:00a.m. news conference.
The vehicle struck the officer, sending him flying into the air 15 feet before colliding with the officers cruiser, again at a high rate of speed, Knecht stated. There was a black ISIS flag hanging in the back window of the car, Knecht explained. The terrorists rampage was just beginning.
After deliberately striking the police officer with his car, the 30-year-old terrorist jumped out of his vehicle, pulled out a large knife and viciously attacked the officer, stabbing him multiple times. A struggle ensued, during which the male suspect stabbed the officer several times before fleeing the scene on foot, northbound down 92nd Street, said Knecht.
Chernyk was taken to hospital and treated for his non-life threatening injuries, meanwhile, a manhunt was launched to find the ISIS terrorist who had fled on foot.
Nobody knew if the terrorist was acting alone or as part of a cell, or what was coming next. Extra police protection was sent to Commonwealth Stadium to stand guard and protect the crowd, as tens of thousands of Edmontonians filed out of the stadium to make their way home after the game. The terrorist was still at large.
At 11:30 p.m. the scene was tense, and Edmonton Global News reporter Laurel Gregory was doing a live report, when suddenly, officials from the Edmonton police frantically began shouting at her to move to get behind a tree or vehicle for her own safety.
A wide-eyed Gregory can be seen complying darting off screen, unsure of her own safety that chaotic Saturday night.
Just moments later, a U-Haul truck was pulled over at a checkstop on Wayne Gretzky Drive near downtown Edmonton. The officer realized the driver fit the description of the terrorist and that his name was similar to the registered owner of the Chevy Malibu-turned-terrorist-weapon. Suddenly, the driver slammed the U-Haul into drive and the tires squealed as the truck took off towards the city centre and a bustling Jasper Avenue on a busy Saturday night.
A police chase ensued, and according to the Edmonton Police Chief, throughout the chase, the truck deliberately tried to hit pedestrians in crosswalks and alleys in two areas along Jasper Avenue. Four people were stuck by the U-Haul while making their way out of bars and restaurants, all were taken to hospital, two with serious injuries.
The truck continued to speed down the busy corridor until the crazed driver lost control of the truck and it slid on its side onto the curb in front of a downtown hotel. The driver, a Somali man with refugee status in Canada, was apprehended and taken into police custody.
By the grace of God, no one was killed that night.
The incidents bear striking similarities to recent terror attacks in Europe, wrote a local news reporter.
These incidents are being investigated as acts of terrorism, said Knecht in his late-night news conference. Edmonton Police, the RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team and the federal security agency began investigating the attacks as acts of terrorism under Section 83.2 of the Canadian criminal code, according to Knecht.
While the hard-nosed law-enforcement officers did their job and began to investigate the terrorists attacks, the countrys elites began a routine all-too-familiar in the aftermath of deadly Islamist terror attacks. Edmonton mayor Don Iveson lectured the public and scolded them for reactions they did not express. To my fellow Edmontonians, it is vital now that we not succumb to hate, that we not be intimidated by violence, and that we respond with the loving strength of this whole community... We will not be divided, he added, in his typical tone.
"When a foreign terrorist, waving an enemy flag, attacks your city with indiscriminate violence and deadly force, how dare you feel anything but love and forgiveness?! Thats an order!" Mayor Iveson seemed to be saying.
Canadas Prime Minister was not to be outdone. Justin Trudeau will never miss an opportunity to lecture Canadians and repeat his favourite weak-kneed and empty slogan: " diversity is our strength ." Right on cue, he released the following:
We cannot and will not let violent extremism take root in our communities. We know that Canadas strength comes from our diversity, and we will not be cowed by those who seek to divide us or promote fear. Edmonton is a strong, resilient city, and I am confident that its citizens will support one another to overcome this tragic event.
Justin Trudeau didnt bother to fly to Alberta to visit the victims or speak to local officials. He did not visit Edmonton for nearly an entire month after the attack.
In contradiction to local police, the Federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale played down the terror attack and insisted there was no connection to a national security threat.
The federal government told Canadians to ignore their lying eyes and just forget about the ISIS flag seen waving in the mans car as he attacked uniformed police officers and pedestrians just weeks after an ISIS propaganda network urged its followers to do just that, strike Westerners with their cars and after hundreds had been murdered this way in Europe over the previous 18 months.
Soon, the Canadian public learned more about the ISIS attacker.
He was born and raised in Somalia. He showed up in Mexico and was detained after illegally entering the United States without any identification or paperwork near Tijuana.
US officials rejected his plea to stay, and began preparing his deportation back to Somalia. Instead of being deported back to Somalia, however, the man escaped and fled US custody, making his way to Washington State before once again crossing an international border illegally and without documentation. He was a self-selected refugee; unscreened and unvetted at his time of arrival.
Lucky for this terrorist, he entered Canada a country that welcomes such mysterious drifters with open arms.
The Somali man made his asylum claim at the Canadian border in 2012. His pending deportation order from the US apparently didnt faze Canadian immigration officials. By the end of 2012, the Somali national was granted refugee status in Canada.
