Thirty-five miles east of Austin, McDade, Texas is quintessential small-town America. McDades colorful history, from its founding in 1871 as a Wild West boomtown and continuing to the much quieter present day, comes to life in The Soul of a Small Texas Town. David Whartons contemporary photographs of the community and its residents and his accompanying narrative reveal growth and decline, shared family histories, traditions, crises, and celebrations. The book explores the impact of local issues, discusses how regional, national, and international events affect the community, and speculates about the towns uncertain future. A fascinating story, it is also an important reflection of life in small rural towns throughout the nation.

PREFACE
This book has two parts. The first is a work of documentary photography that combines visual images and written texts to explore life in a single rural communityMcDade, Texasbetween 1984 and 1989. Its pictures and words attempt to draw connections between the people and events depicted and to examine issues of concern to community residents at the time. I hope it goes beyond merely showing what McDade of the late 1980s and the people who lived there looked like. The first part is divided into seven chapters, each a sequence of approximately fifteen photographs and accompanying text. When viewed and read in sequence, each chapter's pictures and texts introduce various themes, expand upon them, and sometimes relate them to people and themes introduced earlier. The first chapter is introductory; it provides a few facts about McDade and touches briefly on some of the themes explored in greater depth in later chapters. The photographs in chapter 2 are all portraits; they and their legends introduce individual members of the McDade community and tell a little about their lives. To some degree, this chapter serves as a partial cast of characters, as many of these individuals will be seen or heard from again. Chapter 3 examines public social life in McDade; civic, church, and family events figure prominently. All of the pictures in chapter 4 are of events associated with McDade's annual Watermelon Festival, always held on the second weekend in July. Their texts include information about the festivals of the late 1980s, recount anecdotes from earlier festivals, and point up the central significance of the Watermelon Festival to the McDade community. The remaining three chapters are more specific. Chapter 5 explores the role extended family life plays in the community, while chapter 6 compares the lives of men and women in McDade of the late 1980s. Finally, chapter 7 contrasts the attitudes of McDade's children toward their home-town with those of McDade's elderly.
