Editor's Foreword
To those who have visited even briefly, Myanmarstill remembered as Burmais one of the most attractive and intriguing places in Asia. It has vast potential for economic growth thanks to its natural resources. And its human resources are equally promising. Indeed, it was expected that after independence the country would do as well as most and better than those less endowed. Yet, several decades later, it has failed to make much progress economically and has, if anything, slipped back politically.
The not very comforting story of postwar Myanmar is elucidated in this historical dictionary. True to its name, it also reaches much further back, shedding light on earlier periods, whether the British colonial era, the age of the three empires, or even what preceded that. Going beyond history, politics and economics, there are many interesting entries on Myanmar's culture and religion. This is rounded out by an extensive chronology and comprehensive bibliography. All of this material is useful for those who want to know more. But the most important sections remain those dealing with contemporary Myanmar. For this country, once known for its hospitality, has closed itself to the world to such an extent that it is often easier to find information on the past than the present.
Fortunately, the Historical Dictionary of Myanmar was written by a specialist with several decades of experience. Jan Becka* studied at the University of Rangoon, in what was then Burma, in 1958-1960. Ever since, he has followed events there and returned for periodic visits.
Over the years, he has written broadly on Myanmar, with some emphasis on the national liberation movement, military rule, foreign policy, ideology and religion. Dr. Becka, who has long been
