The book may be small but my debts are large. First, my thanks to those historians whose excellent work made my job easier: Edward Crapol, author of the best current study of Tylers presidency; Norma Lois Peterson, whose survey of the Harrison-Tyler years belongs on every historians bookshelf; the late Robert Seager II, who gave us And Tyler Too , a wonderfully readable introduction to the Tyler-Gardiner families; and Robert V. Remini, master biographer of Jackson, Clay, and Websterhis books epitomize the union of the historian and the artist.
I regret that Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., died before the completion of this work. Like many historians, I was introduced to the Jackson, Roosevelt, and Kennedy presidencies through his magisterial work, and Im proud to be included in a series that bears his name. Sean Wilentz, the current editor, read the manuscript and gave me the benefit of his extraordinary knowledge of nineteenth-century American politics. Working with Times Books senior editor Robin Dennis has been a great pleasure. She is truly an amazing practitioner of a vanishing art, and every page of this book was improved by her hard work. Others at Times Books deserve acknowledgment: Jane Elias is a meticulous copy editor, Chris OConnell skillfully oversaw production, and Paul Golob is a first-rate editorial directorwho runs an extraordinarily efficient and supportive operation. John Wright, my literary agent, once again proved indispensable.
Last but far from least theres Gail. For thirty-five years shes shared this writers life and I wish to renew our contract: If youre feeling fancy free, come wander through the world with me and every day will be a lovely day. As long as love still wears a smile, I know that well be two for the road, and thats a long, long while.
