PREFACE
This volume grew out of a conference entitled "NATO after Thirty Years," held on 16-17 April 1980 in Kent, Ohio, and sponsored by the Center for NATO Studies at Kent State University with the support of the NATO Information Service. In addition to the papers presented by the authors of the individual chapters, former Ambassadors Theodore C. Achilles and Robert Strausz-Hup of the United States, and Escott Reid of Canada gave special addresses for the occasion and contributed their views to the proceedings. Further remarks were offered by General Lyman L. Lemnitzer, former Supreme Allied Commander Europe and a patron of the center.
Scholars and government officials knowledgeable in NATO studies served as commentators on the papers: James G. Banks of the Cuyahoga Community College; Albert H. Bowman of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; James Bruce of the National War College; Andreas Dorpalen of Ohio State University; Alfred Goldberg, historian, Office of the Secretary of Defense; Richard F. Grimmett of the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress; Alonzo L. Hamby of Ohio University; Morrell Heald of Case Western Reserve University; Ronald Hoffman of the University of Maryland; Warren F. Kuehl, director of the Center of Peace Studies, University of Akron; Joseph May of Youngstown State University; Stephen M. Millett and Robert L. Norman of the Battelle Institute; Arnold Offner of Boston University; Manfred von Nordheim, director of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Washington, DC; Marvin Zahniser of Ohio State University; and Benedict K. Zobrist, director of the Harry S Truman Library, Independence, Missouri.
