About the Author
Steve Ellner earned his Ph.D. in Latin American history from the University of New Mexico in 1979. He is currently full professor of economic history at the Universidad de Oriente in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, where he has been teaching since 1977. In addition to writing over twenty journal articles and book chapters, Professor Ellner is the author of The Venezuelan Petroleum Corporation and the Debate over Government Policy in Basic Industry (1987) and Venezuela's Movimiento al Socialismo: From Guerrilla Defeat to Innovative Politics (1988), and he is coeditor of The Latin American Left: From the Fall of Allende to Perestroika (1993). Professor Ellner is also a regular contributor to Commonweal.
