Introduction
The free enterprise system was nurtured, shaped, and developed in this country. In the process, the many fields of business developed unique words and expressions that now follow American business practices into the other nations of the world. Unfortunately, the special vocabularies of business are not always easy to understand, especially for those whose native tongue is not English.
This volume offers over 4,000 basic and essential words and phrases used in American business. The most common and useful vocabulary items have been selected from the following business disciplines or fields: accounting, banking, data processing, economics, finance, government, human resources management, international trade, industrial engineering, labor relations, law, management, management science, marketing, production, operations management, statistics, and transportation.
To make this dictionary more helpful, each entry contains an example, illustration, or clarifying notewhichever seems appropriate for the entry. The organization of the entries is quite simple and includes considerable cross-referencing. The definitions and explanatory material have been presented in language that is as simple as possible. Explanatory material and cross-referencing notes appear in parentheses immediately after the definition.
Words or expressions that are entries appear in bold type when they occur as entry heads and slanted roman type when they are cited elsewhere in their own entries or other entries in the dictionary. Words that are cited but are not entries appear in italics. The examples and illustrations appear in italics. An arrowhead () appears before each example, illustration, or clarifying note.
The American business system is a fascinating field of studyand an increasingly important one in this age of globalization. This dictionary will make the basic vocabulary of business available to students and businesspeople around the world.
