ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The idea for this book was born while I was editing a special issue of the Journal of Voluntary Action Research (JVAR). Earlier versions of five of the chapters in the book appeared in the special issue (Vol. 11, no. 1 1982). Jon Van Til, editor of JVAR, was an important source of advice and encouragement during that project. The Association of Voluntary Action Scholars, sponsor of JVAR, has for many years provided me with an important network of scholarly colleagues and friends.
Much of the initial work on the book was done while I was a Visiting Fellow at the Lincoln Filene Center for Citizenship and Public Affairs at Tufts University. Stuart Langton, the center's director, and his outstanding staff have created a very productive and congenial environment. My year at the Filene Center provided me with that most perfect of academic settingsgreat resources and few obligations.
My colleagues at Western Michigan University have also contributed to the completion of this work. David Chaplin and Stanley Robin were generous in providing administrative and clerical support, and Gerald Markle supplied helpful comments on parts of the manuscript.
