FOREWORD BY SERIES EDITOR ANDREW WEIL

T he term integrative nursing is almost redundant. Nurses have long embraced the principles of integrative medicine; often, they have been way ahead of physicians. Because they work more closely with patients, nurses are much more likely to be aware of mind/body interactions; to note correlations of emotional ups and downs with fluctuations in the course of disease. They tend to be more open to natural therapies. They have embraced therapeutic touch and other complementary therapies that physicians rarely consider. They understand the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient and of healing presence. They are more comfortable than most physicians with including the spiritual dimension of human life in their professional work.

Unfortunately, nurses have also long been disempowered in modern medical settings, given orders by mostly male physicians, and unable to openly advocate for more integrative care of patients. Some colleges of nursing have been reluctant to join integrative medicine initiatives, fearing loss of their own professional identity. As founder and director of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, I have always believed that we should first integrate our own health care facilitiescreating new collaborative models among doctors, nurses, and pharmacistsbefore we try to bring in practitioners of Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and other alternative systems and treatments. That remains an unrealized goal, although I am pleased that a number of nurse practitioners have graduated from our fellowship training.

Publication of this key volume in the Oxford University Press Integrative Medicine Library series represents significant progress. My long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Mary Jo Kreitzer, was an obvious choice as senior editor. She was a founder of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, and as founder and director of the University of Minnesotas Center for Spirituality and Healing, her career has bridged the medical and nursing professions, infusing both with a robust integrative perspective. Together with Dr. Mary Koithan of the University of Arizona College of Nursing she has assembled a distinguished roster of contributors to this groundbreaking effort to define the principles and practices of integrative nursing.

Health care in the United States is in great disarray. Americans pay more per capita on health than any other people in the world; health care expenditures are creeping toward 20% of our gross domestic product (GDP), which is simply not sustainable. Most of this enterprise is concerned with the management of existing disease, most of it lifestyle related and therefore preventable. Health care of the future must focus on health promotion and disease prevention, and we must break our dependence on costly, high-tech methods of managing the chronic diseases that now absorb so many of our dollars. In other words, health care of the future must be integrative.
