Preface
During the last twenty years of the nineteenth century, United States Indian policy attempted to incorporate Native Americans into the mainstream of American society, using the reservation as the vehicle for assimilation. Removing, relocating, and consolidating Indian people onto smaller reservations had remained a vital part of the government's policy throughout the 1870s, but by the 1880s officials shifted their focus. To hasten the cultural transformation, reformers and lawmakers reasoned that the allotment of Indian land was the quickest method of achieving assimilation. Gradually dissolving reservation lands and establishing the principle of private property forced assimilation, for it destroyed the cornerstones of Indian culture: tribalism, native religion, and chieftainship. Social Darwinist philosophy emboldened allotment advocates, declaring as it did that Indians who failed to assimilate were doomed to extinction sooner or later.
