PREFACE
The essays in this volume describe, develop, and evaluate or defend a form of critical inquiry for the social sciences. They are addressed primarily to graduate students and to specialists in the fields of political science, sociology, and the philosophy of the social sciences. Integration is provided through the idea of a critical social science developed in the introductory first essay and then elaborated and evaluated in succeeding chapters. Because critical inquiry is not the prevailing approach in the disciplines addressed by the contributors, the title Changing Social Science has suggested itself in both its descriptive and prescriptive
senses.
The major stimulus for compiling Changing Social Science was an interdisciplinary conference on "Critical Theory: Contributors and Criticisms," held at the University of South Carolina in 1980. Three of the chapters which appear here were delivered in a preliminary form at the conference. Three other original essays, and an article specially revised for the volume, were subsequently commissioned by the editors.
The philosophers, sociologists, and political scientists who have collaborated on and contributed to the volume deserve our special thanks for their support and perseverance. We want also to acknowledge and thank the Departments of Philosophy and of Government and International Studies for cosponsoring the conference at the University of South Carolina. Finally, we wish to thank Chester W. Bain, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University, for his encouragement and support for this project.
