Battle for the wilderness: summary, description and annotation

Michael Fromes Battle for the Wilderness is one of the important works of the American conservation movement. Centered on the struggle to pass the 1964 Wilderness Act, the first in a series of preservationist conventions that include the Endangered Species Act and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, this book offers a well-written, workable definition of wilderness and presents conservation as a vital thread in American history. Part I discusses what the author calls Wilderness Values, and tells how our primitive lands have inspired many of the foremost American artists and authors, including George Catlin, Frederick Law Olmstead, Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, and Aldo Leopold, among others. Part II, Saving the Wilderness, goes on to trace conservation philosophy from its emergence to its culmination in the historic Wilderness Act, and discusses the struggles that took place following passage of the Act. In a completely new preface, Frome ruminates on the relative treatment of the wilderness system under successive administrations, and on recent approaches to the preservation of wild lands. A new appendix lists all wilderness areas now designated in the fifty states.

We are a great people because we have been successful in developing and using our marvelous natural resources; but, also, we Americans are the people we are largely because we have had the influence of the wilderness on our lives
John P. Saylor, introducing the Wilderness Bill in the House of Representatives, July 12, 1956.
John Saylor died October 28, 1973 after twelve terms in Congress. He was my friend, but every American who enjoys and loves wild places lost a friend and champion. His monumental contribution endures, however. I dedicate this work to his memory.

Acknowledgments
First, I recall the cooperation and confidence of Paul H. Oehser and George Crosette, who as a committee representing the Wilderness Society invited me to write the original Battle for the Wilderness. I benefited from their continuing encouragement, with utter lack of interference. Now I lament that both have passed on. I am deeply grateful to Stewart M. Brandborg, who was then executive director of the Wilderness Society and who has remained my close friend and advisor; and also to Harry Crandell, Ernest Dickerman, and Clif Merritt, staff members of the old days, and to Ben Beach, Bill Reffalt, and Steve Whitney, present staff members of the society.
I appreciate the review of sections on biological science, ecology, and wildlife by Angela Evenden, Edward E. C. Clebsch, Barrie K. Gilbert, John W. Grandy, Hugh Iltis, Thomas E. Lacher, Eugene P. Odum, and David Wilcove. I was helped immeasurably by members of the committee (composed of Ben Davis, Dave Foreman, Joyce Kelly, Mary Kelly, Michael Kirkhorn, Connie Richardson, Liane Russell and John Tallmadge) who directed and approved my doctoral work on wilderness (completed through the Union Institute in 1993).
I am grateful for input and counsel from federal employees of past and present, including Roger Allin, Lennie Eubanks, Paul C. Fritz, David Klinger, Tom Kovalicky, Riley and Pat McClelland, Connie Myers, Jerry Stokes, John Twiss, Paul Weingart, and William A. Worf; and also to Mike Bader, Les Berenson, Brock Evans, James R. Fazio, Mitch Friedman, Charles H. Stoddard, Lynn Kinter, Bart Koehler, Greg Lais, George C. Nickas, Mark Peterson, Mack Prichard, Paul C. Pritchard, Kevin Proescholdt, Alfred Runte, and Dean Terry.
