Preface
THIS STUDY of Lorenzo de Zavala, the Yucatn-born signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the first vice president of the Republic of Texas, is written primarily for readers in Texas. Nevertheless, four of the seven chapters focus on Zavala's experiences in Mexico, a focus necessary to explain the forces that shaped this complicated man.
With this in mind, Mexican events that affected Texas and Zavala's political development are discussed as succinctly as possible. Thus the narrative is not an in-depth analysis of Spanish and Mexican politics between 1810 and 1836.
I acknowledge a great debt to the pioneer biographer of Zavala, Dr. Raymond Estep, whose 1942 doctoral dissertation at the University of Texas provides the details of Zavala's career in Mexico. Estep's study was published in Spanish in Mexico City in 1952, but Texans have been without a convenient full-length biography of Zavala. Books and articles published since Estep's seminal work and collections of primary material then unavailable have provided more details for the present study.
