Preface
In recommending this book for publication, a reviewer summarized it as a "clash of the titans" in political theory. Asked to say in a sentence what the contributors have tried to achieve, I can do no better. Together, we intend to reassess the character of political theory in the American academy, in order to clarify the opportunities and troubles that the field now faces.
Creating this book culminated in almost two years of intensive correspondence, writing, and editingnot to mention frequent telephone calls of advice and encouragement. But it has a much longer and more personal history than that may imply. Its origins are worth relating here because they say what the following essays are about, as well as how they came to be. Telling the book's story lets me explain its contents and their intended significance. It allows me to acknowledge the ample help of others whose names do not appear among those in the table of contents. And it gives me a first opportunity to explain why a book about major projects in political theory uses the work of John Gunnell to coordinate its essays.
