Preface

Part I
Setting the Stage
Chapter One: Treatment Models and Outcome Evaluation
J. Clark Laundergan, Ph.D.
3
In this chapter, Dr. Laundergan sets the stage for later discussions by reviewing the more common models and theories used in describing and treating chemical dependency. Although research methods are presumed to assure objectivity, what we study and the questions we ask are influenced by our beliefs about alcoholism and other drug abuse. Although the Minnesota Model may be the most widely used model, it is less studied than other approaches that lend themselves to more experimental and measurable research designs.
Chapter Two: Chemical Dependency Research
Patricia Owen, Ph.D.
19
Dr. Owen writes of the complexities of chemical dependency to be taken into account when trying to determine treatment success. These include the difficulty of diagnosing the disease, the variables in treatment, the substance of the research sample, the denial factor, and the problem of geographic moves. She also raises the question of categorizing a slip and reminds us of the personality factors and the individual's life after treatment that constitute true recovery.

Evaluating Treatment from Admission to Aftercare
Chapter Three: What Is Evaluation?
Jerry Spicer
29
A definition of evaluation begins this chapter, and the author cites reasons for evaluating. He gives illustrations of types of evaluation approaches and the goals they may accomplish; explores the differences between evaluation and research; looks at the impact evaluation can have on planning and managing a treatment program; and concludes by examining the limitations and advantages of follow-up surveys.
Chapter Four: The Planning Stages
Jerry Spicer
39
The author describes decisions that precede the creation of a follow-up evaluation system. These include assembling a planning committee of people affected by the study, listing the objective, setting goals, and developing a budget.
Chapter Five: The Follow-up System
Jerry Spicer
45
After the planning stages, the typical treatment program is ready to begin preparing for an evaluation. The author gives an overall view of the decisions that must be made to conduct a study, including the methods of survey, setting the sample size, and designing a questionnaire. He concludes with sections on data analysis and the importance of pre-testing.

Chapter Six: Addressing Special Issues
Jerry Spicer
63
Once everything is set in motion toward conducting a survey, special issues and problems may put impediments in the path. Contracts with consultants must be negotiated, reliability checks must be set in place, ethical issues may crop up, and staff may be dragging their feet. This chapter contains sage advice for anticipating and countering such obstacles.
