Foreword
The first time I visited the Mother Neff State Park was on the evening of 25 May 1984, when I camped beneath the boughs of some of the same trees nurtured there by Governor Pat Neff. I had been in the field all day, visiting abandoned towns and photographing them for a ghost town book I was writing, and I had just been taking photographs in the nearby community of The Grove. After a long day of picture making, interviewing, and note taking, I was ready for some rest. Having purchased some groceries earlier that afternoon, I followed the map and sign posts to Mother Neff State Park, which I had heard somewhere was the "first Texas state park."
After paying a nominal fee at the park entry, I found myself a grass-covered spot to camp beneath huge trees not far from a covered pavilion and there put my bright orange-colored pup tent. Having before been surprised while tenting by rain storms, I thought ahead that I might need to seek shelter beneath the nearby roof should I loose my lightweight tent that night in a

thunderstorm. As events turned out, the evening was cloudless and calm, so I prepared my simple dinner using a close-by barbeque grill, and then I set out on foot in the dimming light to "see the park."
Walking up to and then into the open-sided concession building, I could see that it was by no means new. In fact, the old stonework in the twilight seemed even older than its 1930s construction. The style, however, reminded me of structures I had seen built by National Park Service personnel during the days of the New Deal. I could not get over the size and beauty of the big, open fireplace, and I wondered how many overnight groups over the decades had roasted wieners and toasted marshmallows there. Overhead were massive roof beams, which a bronze plaque on the wall recorded as having been hewn and placed there by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. By this time, however, darkness had fallen, and bone-tired from a day in the field, I retired to my tent for a night of rest. The next morning I was up before dawn and in the car headed for the next ghost town site on my hit list. My first visit to Mother Neff State Park had come to its close, but I remembered it, and since then have returned time and again.
