This book is dedicated to the people of the Golden Triangle:
To the friends I have made and greatly respect,
To the numerous hosts and hostesses who prepared meals and provided
shelter during my field trips,
To medical practitioners who shared their vast knowledge of the plants
around them,
To artisans who demonstrated their crafts,
To farmers who permitted me to visit their fields,
To headmen and elders who spent valuable time conversing with me,
For their hospitality, graciousness, and willingness to share their lives and
experiences with an outsider.
May their love of life in the mountains, their respect for the forest, and their
distinct ways of life continue.
Because of these many treasured experiences my life has been forever
changed; it is richer by far, for I have met a truly noble and gentle people.

Preface
I first saw the people of the Golden Triangle in 1976. I had come to Thailand on a sabbatical leave from Whitman College to collect plants for the University of California, Berkeley. One day a friend who worked among the Akha and Lahu tribes asked if I would like to accompany him on a trip to the remote mountains of the northern region of Thailand. I eagerly accepted his invitation and began this trip, which changed my life!
