In 1956 the Maine Lobstermans Association was created to break the stranglehold placed on the group by fish dealers, who the fishermen accused of price fixing. Nearly 4,000 fishermen refused to fish in retaliation for dealers price reductions of their catch, and these disgruntled seamen tried to persuade the rest of their lobstering brothers and sisters to do the same. Before the strike could make a real impact, the dealers complained to the Justice Department, claiming that the associations striking fishermen were harassing those who chose to continue working. Thus summoned, the Department went on to charge both parties with antitrust violations, instigating a circus-like investigation and trial. Given a cast of rugged fisherman, slippery dealers, and ardent yet misguided federal prosecutors, University of Florida history professor Ron Formisano recreates the trial and its various repercussions from the beginning of the conflict to its unexpected and ultimately inconsequential end. Remarkably thorough, The Great Lobster War reveals much about the character of the fishermen as well as the people of Maine, playing up the confrontation that pitted underdog lobstermen against dealers backed by the power of a market economy.

Introduction
Although this book is about lobster fishermen on the Maine coast, the impulse to write it came to me fifteen years ago while waiting in a "grain line" in the middle of Kansas, a spot near the center of the continental United States, a good place to reflect on the power and contradictions of American individualism. Deep in the heartland, I was sitting in the driver's seat of a 450-bushel wheat truck on a hot summer day during the feverish work of the annual wheat harvest. A grain line forms when the towering cylindrical storage bins known as grain elevators get filled to capacity and trucks, coming in from all over the countryside to unload wheat, queue up in a long train while grain is off-loaded from the elevators into strings of railway cars or monster semitrailers. While waiting, I was fascinated by the wide variety of vehicles streaming to the same place, from pickups and towed wooden wagons (whose cargoes were dumped by raising their front ends in a sling) to big rigs with automatic lifts for dumping. The assortment of trucks seemed to symbolize farmers' historic individualism which, though limited by minimalist cooperative arrangements and by
