PREFACE
This book comes from a sixteen-year program of research. But in a very real way, it began for me with a need to better understand my own experience of work. Like most people, I found that my energies for work could rise and fall dramatically. In my years at UCLA in the 1970s, for example, I was mostly doing research on conflict management in organizations. I would have periods of excitement and fulfillment when being very productive was its own reward. I remember being very excited about writing articles that I knew would make a difference. Likewise, I remember the excitement that Ralph Kilmann and I shared when we were putting together our conflict instrument. But there would be other times when I disliked doing the workwhen I had to fight myself to get anything done. Meanwhile, I'd be teaching MBA students some prevailing model of motivation based on
