Editor's Foreword
Jordan, as the author of this book rightly stresses, is at the crossroads of Middle Eastern events. It is involved in the Palestinian issue, relations with Israel, currents in the broader Arab and Islamic worlds, and international relations with the great powers. But, as he also shows, it has always been at the crossroads, long before the present kingdom was established and, due to its geographic position, it will continue to be involved in and affected by broader movements in this sensitive and turbulent area.
There is, however, much more to Jordan than what appears in the media when one event or another catches the public's eye. Domestic politics are no less lively; relations among various ethnic, religious, and social groups must be adjusted; the economy has to develop to meet the needs of an expanding population; and cultural and educational progress cannot be neglected. So this dictionary looks both inward and outward to inform anyone interested in discovering how Jordan has managed to fare as well as it has under exceptionally trying circumstances. The reader may be a student or scholar, diplomat, businessperson, or first-time visitor to an intriguing place.
We are pleased that this historical dictionary of Jordan has been written in a very straightforward and accessible manner by someone who knows the country well. Peter Gubser, who is now president of American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA), has traveled widely and written extensively on Jordan, where he has done considerable field research. His writings include Jordan: Crossroads of Middle Eastern Events, whose theme was referred to above.

A Note to the Reader
The spelling of Arabic words can be problematic, so I have chosen a pragmatic and contemporary approach. If a name is well known to the international public, I accept that spelling rather than a strict transliteration (e.g., Nasser, not Nasir). If most contemporary books spell a place name in one way while older ones in another, I accept the contemporary usage (e.g., Karak, not Kerak). Otherwise, I use standard transliteration with minimal diacritical marks, according to Hans Wehr's Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic (5th ed. New York: French & European Publications, 1985).
