Preface
You are about to begin an adventure in reading. Through these pages you will be a witness to the excitement of The Oklahoma Story. It begins with our first settlers entering this land over 15,000 years ago, living in caves and hunting the Columbian mammoth and other huge animals now extinct; and it continues with Spaniards, Frenchmen, and Americans exploring this wilderness during the early historic period. You will sense the daring of swift-riding Kiowa and Comanche lancers charging into a herd of buffalo on the Oklahoma prairies. Perhaps you will share the suffering of the Five Civilized Tribes on their "Trail of Tears" to Oklahoma, or feel the danger of scouting with Cherokee General Stand Watie's raiders during the Civil War, driving a herd of Texas longhorn cattle up the Chisholm Trail to the Kansas cow towns, or racing for a homestead in the Cherokee Outlet. You may endure with the Sooners the hardships of opening pioneer farms and building new towns on the Oklahoma frontier. And, finally, you will appreciate the miracle of the transformation of Oklahoma from a wilderness territory to a modern American state.
Several Reader Aids are included to help you get the most out of this book. Study the illustrations as carefully as you do the printed pages. Each is related to some important part of the story you are reading. Also refer to the

maps each time a river, mountain, meridian, or boundary is mentioned. Knowing where these points are located will improve your understanding of Oklahoma history.
Two Reader Aids are placed at the end of the book"Proper Names and Terms" and "Definitions." The story of Oklahoma is more complex than that of most of the other states. It requires the use of names of persons, places, and terms which often are difficult to pronounce. These are listed in the "Proper Names and Terms'' section. Each proper name, place, or term is divided and accented. This story also requires words that may be new to you. These words are listed in the "Definitions" section. With each word listed is its meaning or definition.
Use these Reader Aidsthe illustrations, maps, Proper Names and Terms, and Definitions. You'll get more out of The Oklahoma Story. You will more fully appreciate the drama, excitement, and achievement of the Oklahoma heritage.
