A century ago, the Canadian historian, Abb Casgrain, made a transcript of the journal of Louis Antoine de Bougainville, but chose not to include it in his Collection des Manuscripts du Marchal de Lvis (12 vols. Quebec, 18891895). That was a mistake because Bougainville's journal is a gem. It contains the observations and insights of a French officer who was aide-de-camp to the Marquis de Montcalm and active in a key arena of the Seven Years' War in North America. In its pages the reader will find valuable material on military affairs, Indian relations, and life in New France in the closing years of the contest for continental hegemony waged between Britain and France.
