It was Grgoire's intention to give an international launching to De la littrature des ngres, on which he had been working for many years; he turned to two friends, the Swiss Paulus Usteri and the American David Bailie Warden, to have the book translated and published in German and English as well as in French.1 He may have thought of this as a form of insurance, in case the strict censorship under Napoleon prevented publication in France, but it also expressed his awareness that the fight against racism and slavery was international, and that he was working in concert with the international intellectual community to whom he dedicated his book.
Usteri and Warden shared Grgoire's ardent republicanism and faith in democracy, as well as his intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for the dissemination of knowledge. Grgoire made their acquaintance when they came to Paris during the reign of Napoleon as emissaries of the only two republics recognized by the emperor, Switzerland and the United States. They became personal friends and intellectual companions, and he valued them as representatives of the two countries in which he

1. De la littrature des ngres was published in Paris in 1808. Usteri's translation appeared the following year: ber die Literatur der Neger, oder Untersuchungen ber ihre Geistesfhigkeiten (Tbingen: Cotta, 1809). Cotta was then the leading German publishing house, known particularly for its edition of Goethe's works. A second translation into German appeared in that same year:
