Contents
Preface

Students study community development for a variety of reasons. Some come to the course with a wealth of life experience and a great deal of expertise in community development work. Others are completely new to the area, and come with an interest in how community organization and capacities impact the well-being of citizens. Our vision for this book, therefore, was to include theoretical and historical perspectives, as well as a brief look at the contemporary approaches used and skills needed by community workers. We have highlighted many major contributions by Canadians to the development and practice of community development. We are very pleased to have prepared this second edition of the book, which remains consistent to the purpose and themes outlined in the first edition, but updated throughout to reflect current and emerging aspects of community development practice in Canada.

As with the first edition, this edition was written for a broad audience. Community Development in Canada, second edition, is intended for related courses at community college and university, as well as in adult education and professional development environments.

There are three main themes in this book. In , we look at Canadian community development practice. We have selected case studies from each province and territory to illustrate principles of community practice, and we also discuss development in Aboriginal and international communities, and the future of community development and social welfare in Canada. The book also includes an extensive bibliography to assist instructors and students with future study.

Each chapter of the second edition was reviewed and revised with various updates throughout the content and discussion questions. Several chapters received the most significant revision and are detailed here. In , a new section on the way forward highlights principles for anti-oppressive practice for community development professionals to consider in international efforts.

Community Development in Canada, second edition, is accompanied by a Test Item File, which is available to instructors for downloading from a password-protected section of Pearson Education Canadas online catalogue (vig.pearsoned.ca). Navigate to your books catalogue page to view a list of those supplements that are available. See your local sales representative for details and access.

Acknowledgments

Many people have made contributions to this book. My childrenKaylee, Jenna, and Kobehave been wonderful sources of creativity and inspiration. I would like to thank my partner, Shelley, for the constant care, support, and encouragement she gives to her family and to me throughout the evenings and weekends spent on this project. I have also been very fortunate to have wonderful friends, colleagues, and traditional people who have been patient and kind teachers. I am also grateful to David Hannis, who has shared what he has learned from his years of experience and allowed me to benefit from his expertise.

Jason D. Brown

My contribution to this long overdue text is a reflection of many years work as a community developer and adult educator. It has truly been a pleasure to collaborate on this project with Jason Brown, who shares my passion for community, and with the good folks at Pearson Education, who initially prodded me into action and remained supportive during the evolution of this publication. I owe a particular debt of gratitude to the many selfless community activists I have worked with in the past and to countless numbers of social work students at Grant MacEwan University, whose energy and critical thinking capacities have served to remind me of my own physical and intellectual limitations. I have also drawn strength from my two daughters, Katherine and Kristina, whose strong ethical perspectives on life, commitment to social justice, and unconditional love have been a valued source of inspiration for me.

David Hannis

We would also like to thank the staff at Pearson Education for their understanding and support throughout this project. The contributions of Rema Celio, developmental editor; Caroline Kaiser, copyeditor; as well as Joel Gladstone, are reflected in this work. We would also like to thank Raj Singh and his team at MPS.

And for their thoughtful comments and helpful suggestions, we would like to thank the following reviewers:
