FOREWORD
Lets Get R.E.A.L.
by Joe Hart, CEO of Dale Carnegie Training
Like many emerging leaders, when I was first coming into the world of business, I read How to Win Friends and Influence People. The classic message of putting people first is one that resonated with me personally and professionally. As I started working with the Dale Carnegie organization, ultimately becoming the CEO, I began to really understand the meaning of that message. Its not just lip service, but is the foundation of effective leadership.
Dale Carnegie understood that every single person has greatness, and our challenge as leaders is to help them find and develop it. My experience has been that people are capable of so much more than they even know. Everyone has blind spots when it comes to hidden strengths and talents, and it takes a good leader to point them out.
How does a leader do this? The answer lies in the way we interact with each other. That really defines everything. It affects how much we can accomplish, whether or not we are happy, and whether we inspire others to see more in themselves than they already do.
At Dale Carnegie Training, our leadership mission is simple. We strive to help people see things from a different perspectivefrom the other persons point of viewso that they can accomplish things that they couldnt do alone.
We wanted to discover what drives the most effective leaders. What is it that allows them to motivate and inspire others to be their very best? To get the answers, we conducted research that spanned thirteen countries and involved thousands of people. What we found was really intriguing.
We discovered that there are four characteristics that drive the greatest leaders. Those characteristics form the acronym R.E.A.L.
R: Reliable
E: Empathetic
A: Aspirational
L: Learner
In other words, great leaders are seen as doing what they say they are going to do.
Theyre empathetic to others. Their followers aspire to be like them. And they never stop learning. Thats why we are so excited to have written this book. LEAD! enables emerging leaders to unlock the door to their own potential, and that of the people around them.
There is one other component to great leadership, and its at the foundation of everything else. That component is Trust.
Think about that for a moment. If we have a leader who demonstrates certain behaviors that are usually associated with empathysuch as asking how our weekend was or how our big project is moving forwardbut we dont trust them, were not going to perceive it as empathy. Well see it as self-serving. We wont be inspired to learn from a leader we dont trust. We certainly wont want to be like them.
Trust is the underpinning of everything else, and thats what differentiates the Dale Carnegie brand from others. Dale Carnegie was himself a trustworthy man who consistently demonstrated integrity. Its those two things, integrity and being consistent in what we say and do and how we communicate, that lead to trust.
To be the person who holds the position that Dale Carnegie himself held in this organization is a great honor and a great responsibility. Its not something I take lightly, and thats why I am excited to share the Dale Carnegie message on leadership. LEAD! will help you see things from a different perspectivefrom the other persons point of viewso that you can accomplish things that you cant do alone.
