Supporting that fact is the additional reality that for fourteen hundred years now, Muslims have behaved violently in ways that are sanctioned by those teachings. Everywhere that Muslims have gone, some of themindeed, generally the most devout, dedicated, and knowledgeablehave waged war against non-Muslims and made life difficult for them in other ways that are also mandated by Islamic law.

Much of this warfare has been directed against Europe and Europeans. It has been such a thoroughgoing and sustained war that many of Europes most enduring cultural monuments bear its mark, from La Chanson de Roland to the Commedia to Don Quijote de la Mancha , from the Cathedral of Crdoba to the Hagia Sophia. It has given Europe many of its foremost heroes and saints, and been nothing less than formative for the European character.

But Europe after World War II was weary, weary in all sorts of ways, most of all weary of itself. In reaction to appalling crimes and jaw-dropping evil committed by some Europeans, the continent itself fell into a slough of self-hatred. It no longer wanted to be Europe. It grew indifferent to its past, and that indifference bred contempt. Europeans began to be taught that the noble knights and courageous Crusaders were actually racists and colonialists who must be repudiated, and that every European should be embarrassed about.

Much of this self-hatred took the form of a denial of, or indifference to, the reality of the 1,400-year war that the warriors of Islam had waged upon Europe. Islam is a religion of peace, Europeans and North Americans and other non-Muslims were told. The problem was not Islamic jihad, it was the Crusaders then and now, the original Crusaders who began the tensions by intruding on a peaceful and idyllic Muslim world, and the modern-day Crusaders who were carrying out an imperialist, colonialist project.

Europe and America and Australia, went the story, could and should welcome Muslims now, because they were in need, and because we had wronged them historically. Their beliefs were entirely benign, except where they were twisted and hijacked by a tiny minority of extremists who were dwarfed in numbers and influence by Christian white supremacists. Muslims would enter Europe and take up the slack for an aging work force, creating with native Europeans a new, harmonious, multicultural society that would be the worlds prime exhibit of the strength of diversity.

The principal, but by no means the only, problem with this scenario was that it was based on fantasy and fiction. The Islam that we were told was the dominant and mainstream form of the religion had actually never existed in the history of the religion, and did not exist in our own age. Many of the migrants carried their Islamic values, the same values that led their forefathers to wage war against Christendom for over a millennium, into Europe, North America, and Australia, as anyone who was assessing the situation in a clear-eyed manner could have foreseen.

But not only did Europe discard reality and embrace fantasy. Its elected and unelected authorities also began to demand that all of us embrace it as well, on pain of social ostracism and professional and personal ruin. Those who dared to point out what Islam had taught and what its historical record was were excoriated, vilified, and sometimes even fined or imprisoned. It was that old European folk tale, The Emperors New Clothes, come to life: if one did not embrace the fantasy, one would be punished.

Many books have been written about these facts. But here now at last is one that makes sense of why it all happened. Every politician in the Western world should be required to read Dr. Hampls work. But that, of course, would entail their shaking off their comforting fantasies.

T he Muslim mayor of the English town of Oldham starts the City Council meeting by inviting an Imam to pray in Arabic. The prayer is followed by an English prayer pleading to Allah to punish all unbelievers. In Great Britain, the National Crime Agency found there are tens of thousands of victims of slavery in the country, some were only 12 years old.

PayPal closed the accounts of Jihad Watch, Barenaked Islam and the American Freedom Defense Initiative (these groups did nothing worse than map the jihadi attacks against the West). In Sydney the city authorities have banned the construction of a synagogue because the building could be a terrorist target.

Barcelonas Chief Rabbi urges Jews to emigrate. In one month, Facebook deleted 288,000 hate posts. Yet the company somehow forgot to do anything about the Islamic States manual of instructions on how to produce explosives to kill the infidels. Denmark organizes classes for terrorists returning from the Islamic State, offering them forgiveness, generosity and kindness, as well as free accommodation and financial support. The EU has declared war on illegal immigration: it prohibited sales of inflatable boats to Libya.

The Pope instructed Europeans that the dignity of migrants is more important than the safety of the local population. In the past two years, the French religious authorities sold 40 churches, while another 27 churches were demolished. It is estimated that another thousand churches will follow in the next decade. The West turns to the East, not the post-Communist East but the other one with deserts and camels.
