CONTENTS

F or more than two centuries, IU has served the people of Indiana and ascended to become one of the nations and worlds finest research universities. The bicentennial is truly an occasion for celebration and an opportunity to reflect with pride on all that Indiana University has achieved in the previous two hundred years.

Indiana University Bloomington: Americas Legacy Campusis the first of several bicentennial publications by Indiana University Press, all of which explore a wide variety of aspects of this universitys rich history. This book focuses on the architectural heritage of the Bloomington campusoften cited as one of the most beautiful campuses in the countryand tells the story of its growth and development.

Many things characterize a great school like Indiana Universityrenowned faculty, dedicated administrators, a vibrant student body, distinguished academic and educational traditions, matchless heritage, highly engaged alumni, and a remarkable and inspiring history. In many ways, what unifies and brings all of this together is a beautiful campus and its extraordinary architecture. The impact of all of these has created the very essence of Indiana University. As Winston Churchill famously said, We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.

No one is better suited to tell the story of the architectural history of the Bloomington campus than Terry Clapacs. It is virtually impossible to look at any of the eight Indiana University campuses without seeing Terrys enormous impact.

When he retired from the university in 2009 as vice president and chief administrative officer, Terry was one of the longest-serving vice presidents in Indiana Universitys history. Over the course of four decades, he worked for more than half a dozen IU presidents, and I am pleased to count myself among that number.

It is no exaggeration to say that over the years Terry has become a living archive of the transformations that have taken place across the university. During his years of dedicated service, Terry oversaw the development of approximately two-thirds of what is now Indiana University, including more than six hundred buildings throughout the IU system, as well as the construction of the Richmond and New Albany campuses.

Terry always understood that the first priority for any building or facility is that it serve as well as possible the needs of the faculty and students in pursuing education and research of the highest quality. He also understood that this could be done with structures of beauty and elegance. As the renowned art and social critic John Ruskin said, We require from buildings two kinds of goodness: first, the doing their practical duty well: then that they be graceful and pleasing in doing it.

Terry remained equally focused on preserving the natural beauty of IUs campuses. Like Herman B Wells, he understood that in order to cultivate the most productive intellectual environment, faculty and students need places to think, room to contemplate, space to debate and discuss.
