Congratulations on deciding to take the AP Comparative Government and Politics exam!

This is a challenging and engaging AP course that will introduce you to the dynamics of government and politics around the world. By focusing on six case studies, you will have the opportunity to apply the comparative method to gain insight into how political systems operate and transition. The six countries covered in this course are Great Britain, Iran, Russia, China, Mexico, and Nigeria. Studying them will help you learn to evaluate political events as a global citizen, and at the same time, you will better understand political activity in the United States.

We prepared this volume to provide you with a resource beyond your textbook and classroom material to help you master the material and confidently take the AP Comparative Government and Politics exam.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Suzanne Bailey teaches AP Comparative and U.S. Government and Politics, along with AP Micro and Macroeconomics at Virgil I. Grissom High School in Huntsville, Alabama. She has served as the College Board Advisor for AP Comparative Government and Politics, as well as a member of its Test Development Committee. In addition, she has participated in the AP Exam Reading for this course since 2004, serving as Table Leader and Question Leader. A College Board consultant for both Comparative and U.S. Government and Politics, she has led sessions at APAC and NCSS as well as conducting one-day and weeklong training sessions. She earned her National Board Certification in 2004 and renewed in 2014.

Glenn Hastedt holds a PhD in political science from Indiana University. Formerly the chair of the political science department at James Madison University, he is now professor and chair of the justice studies department. He is a longtime AP Comparative Government and Politics reader who has held numerous leadership positions at the Reading. He has also served on the test development committee, reviewed course proposals, and developed test questions. Over the past several years he has led several Comparative Government and Politics sessions at the Advanced Placement Annual Conferences and at Advanced Placement Summer Institutes. He has also led sessions for new and experienced readers at one-day workshops and at APACs.
