PREFACE

With this book I want to invite you to study a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly central to your daily life and to the world in which you pursue your studies. I hope to assist you in developing the capacity to study global communication by stimulating your interest in the investigation of complex questions about this field and thus to explore your own ways of reflecting on its various dimensions. Throughout the book I want you to learn the art of asking questions. I am convinced that the essence of any academic and intellectual project begins with asking questions.

In this book I will introduce global communication, describe its global context and its history, and ways of studying this field. I will also propose the analytical and normative perspectives that could direct the study of global communication. These perspectives reflect obviously my personal preferences and you can exchange them for other angles if you find these more enlightening and helpful for your understanding of the field.

In the following chapters I will invite you to look at the economic, political and cultural dimensions of global communication. Each chapter will have questions for reflection and discussion.
