Analysing Historical Narratives
MAKING SENSE OF HISTORY
Studies in Historical Cultures
General Editor: Stefan Berger
Founding Editor: Jrn Rsen
Bridging the gap between historical theory and the study of historical memory, this series crosses the boundaries between both academic disciplines and cultural, social, political and historical contexts. In an age of rapid globalization, which tends to manifest itself on an economic and political level, locating the cultural practices involved in generating its underlying historical sense is an increasingly urgent task.

This volume is a result of the long-standing engagement of the three editors with historical narratives. Nicola Brauch has dealt with the narrative structure of texts produced within the field of historical didactics, whereas Chris Lorenz has reflected on the debate on narrative in historical theory. He and Stefan Berger have a long-standing cooperation in examining historical narratives produced within national historiographies that go back to the research programme National Histories in Modern Europe, which was funded by the European Science Foundation between 2003 and 2008. They co-edited three collected volumes in this project. Nicola Brauch and Stefan Berger have intensified their cooperation since 2010, when both found themselves direct colleagues at Ruhr-University Bochum. In Bochum they were joined by Chris Lorenz, who came as a Marie-Curie / Gerda Henkel Fellow in 201415, and after became an international research fellow at the Institute for Social Movements (ISB).
The foundation of this volume was built at the conference Analysing Historical Narratives, which took place in Bochum in 2016. We would like to thank the Fritz Thyssen Foundation for funding the conference. We would also like to thank our authors for working with us during the following five years to create the present volume. We hope that this volume will be of interest to all who are reflecting on historical narratives in teaching, research, historical theory and the history of historiography. It is in no way meant as a comprehensive treatment of the subject area. Rather we present a range of case studies in the hope that they might inspire others to analyse the ways in which the narrative framings of history actually work.
