A STORIED PRELUDE
After supper, Secretary Chang went for a walk on the streets of D city. It was hot. Walking out of the door was like entering a furnace.
When he came to a quiet street in a remote area, he saw on the road-side a farmers tricycle truck loaded with watermelons; on the ground there spread a bamboo sheet. A boy clod with dirt sat on it, eating a steamed bun. A woman with plain clothing stood by the tricycle, sweating and looking at the people passing by. Besides her was a man in grey shirt wet with sweat on the back. There were a few map-like sweat marks on the shoulder as well.
They smiled broadly when they saw Secretary Chang approaching. The woman talked in a sweet voice, Come on and taste our watermelon, all red and sandy meat, very fresh and thirst-quenching. The man picked a melon from the truck and cut it open. Indeed, red meat with black seeds, very tempting.
Secretary Chang said, What a melon! They must be selling very well. The woman replied that there were too few pedestrians on this street. It would take three to four days to sell their load of watermelons. Why dont you go to the center of the city?said Secretary Chang, There are more people there. The husband shook his head like a hand drum: Watermelon farmers trucks are not allowed to enter the downtown area. The woman asked, Brother, where do you live? Let him deliver to you, no matter which floor you live. The boy on the ground also shouted repeatedly, Uncle, please buy some!
Hearing the childs voice, Secretary Chang felt his heart warming up. He also answered repeatedly, Alright, alright, uncle will buy. He took out a 50 yuan note from his pocket and said to the man, I will buy only 30 yuan of melon. Take the remaining 20 yuan and ask your woman and kid to take a bath in a hotel and have a bowl of noodle. It is so hot; how could you let your boy eat only steamed bun? Let me help you to tend the stall and sell the watermelon for a while.
The woman burst out in laughter, You know how to sell watermelons, big brother? Secretary Chang also laughed: My family used to be watermelon farmers too. The woman was afraid of losing this business and agreed with many thanks.
At this time, a fat man and a thin guy came along. The fat man was shaking his T-shirt to stir up the air to cool him down. They came to the melon stall and stared for a long time before asking, Secretary Chang, what are you do? When Chang realized that they had recognized him, he said These are relatives from my native village. Since I happen to have some spare time, I am helping them sell melons for a while.
The fat man opened his mouth but nothing came out. He and the thin guy did not know what to do: to stay or to leave. Secretary Chang said, Go on with your walk. The two felt like they had gotten amnesty. They repeatedly said alright and they would return soon. Indeed, before long the two came back. Claiming that they had guests at home, each purchased 100 pounds of watermelon. The farmer wanted to deliver for them but they called a cab to take the melons. A few minutes later, cars came one after another. They belonged respectively to the bureau chief, the section head, the chairman of the Union, the township director and so on. They surrounded the small tricycle truck. Some said that they had been thinking of shopping for watermelon but did not know where to find good ones; some said their work unit had just finished a conference that afternoon and wanted to celebrate; still others said that they wanted to make some small contribution to poverty relief. Secretary Chang and the farmer could barely keep up. The customers did the weighing and loading themselves. Some bought 100 pounds and some 300. The truck load of watermelons was sold out in less than 10 minutes.
At the beginning, the farmer was worried that somebody might not pay or may short-change him. What happened was exactly the opposite. A bagful of watermelons was worth about 2030 yuan but the buyers gave him a 50 yuan notes. 100 pound watermelons were about 50 yuan but the buyers gave him a 100 yuan note each. They all refused the change. More and more customers came. Those who were not able to buy complained to the farmer that he should have brought more. Secretary Chang said to those colleagues who were unable to buy, Thank you everybody. This year, all the watermelon farmers that have come to our city are my relatives. If you need watermelons, please go to their stalls to buy.
