Alpaslan zerdem teaches in the areas of post-conflict recovery and politics of humanitarianism, and he is Convenor of the MA in Post-war Recovery Studies Course at the Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit (PRDU). With field research experience in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, El Salvador, Kosovo, Liberia, The Philippines, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka and Turkey, Dr zerdems research interests centre around post-conflict reconstruction, reintegration of former combatants and disaster management. He is the author of Post-war Recovery: Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (I.B. Tauris, 2008), and co-author of Disaster Management and Civil Society: Earthquake Relief in Japan, Turkey and India (I.B. Tauris, 2006). He has also taken an active role in the initiation and management of several consultancy and commissioned research projects at the PRDU.
Richard Bowd has completed his PhD research at the Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit (PRDU) at the University of York, which examined the social reintegration of ex-combatants in Rwanda and its implications on social capital restoration and reconciliation. Richard has also conducted extensive research in Kosovo, Rwanda, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Ethiopia and has written and presented research papers based on this research. He has held a research position at the University of Salford and has taught on a number of politics modules at the University of York, including convening the Graduate Research Methods module. His research interests include: post-conflict reconstruction, reintegration of ex-combatants, reconciliation, security sector reform, African conflicts and social capital and social development.
Authors
Victor Asiedu is a doctoral student in Post-war Recovery and Development Unit (PRDU) at the University of York. His research explores how community-based disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) can facilitate a more sustainable peace-building. Victor is an ex-artillery officer in the Ghanaian Army and has a wide peacekeeping experience in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Lebanon.
John Burns is a senior researcher based at the Feinstein International Centre office in Addis Ababa. Since early 2006, John has worked in partnership with seven organizations in Africa, looking at the development and application of an approach and tools to measure the impact of humanitarian assistance programs. Prior to joining the Centre, John worked as a consultant for the European Commission and was responsible for their food security initiatives in southern Sudan. He has also worked in various capacities for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme in Africa and Central Asia.
Andrew Catley is the Research Director at the Tufts University, Feinstein International Centre office in Addis Ababa. Andrew has been adapting participatory approaches to impact assessment in the horn of Africa since the mid-nineties. An early pioneer of privatized, community-based approaches to primary veterinary care in pastoral areas, he co-developed the participatory epidemiological methods now recognized as standard approaches for epizootic disease investigation and surveillance in marginalized areas.
David Connolly is a Research Fellow at the Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit, University of York. He specializes in the theory and practice of post-war recovery and conflict resolution. Practical insight is fundamental to Davids research, teaching and writing. Since 2000, he has conducted and led numerous participatory research projects and capacity support initiatives for communities in Afghanistan, Indonesia, Northern Ireland and Sierra Leone.
Sohini Dutt is a doctoral student in geography at Kansas State University, USA. Her research interests include environmental hazards and health/medical geography. She is also interested on gender issues and her areal speciality is in South Asia.
Maria Holt is a Lecturer at the Centre for the Study of Democracy (University of Westminster, London). She has carried out considerable research on Muslim women and violent conflict in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories, and has published a book and several chapters and articles on this subject.
