Preface
This book aims to provide a contemporary text on the significant changes, challenges and debates about how housing in Australia is consumed and governed in the 21st century. Housing in Australia is a national obsession. It is rare for a week to go by without a national media outlet producing a piece about housing affordability, housing policy settings, housing finance etc. Through both empirical and theoretical studies, the book builds on established themes in housing studies such as population and economic change, policy shifts, and homelessness, but also introduces new concerns around Indigenous housing and environmental change. In doing so, the text provides original and in-depth insights into some of the contemporary factors shaping the production and consumption of housing in Australia and how they intersect with policy. While the focus of this text is on Australia, many of the issues confronting housing in 21st-century Australia are familiar concerns to other parts of the world. For instance how do suburban-based societies adjust to the realities of aging populations, anthropogenic climate change and the significant implications such change has for housing? How has policy been translated and assembled in different national contexts? Similarly, what policy settings are required to guide the production and consumption of housing in a post-global financial crisis period?
We would like to thank the many contributors who responded with alacrity and enthusiasm to this project. We believe the chapters assembled in this book will contribute to emerging and ongoing housing debates in 21st-century Australia. Finally, we would like to thank Peter Phibbs, Lauren Costello, Michael Darcy, Tim Jones and Jacqueline Nelson for their enthusiasm, encouragement and support of this project.
