THE YEAR 1987 marked a decade of sustained reform under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping. In the years following the Third Plenum of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in December 1978, Deng and his close associates reversed the course of the Maoist model of revolution and introduced reforms of historic significance in virtually every sector of Chinas internal and external development The decade epitomized the rise of the Deng Xiaoping line of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Existing scholarly works and journalistic accounts have well documented the various aspects of the dramatic phenomena of post-Mao reforms. There is, however, insufficient analysis and assessment of the basic nature and long-term significance of the post-Mao developments. What precisely does socialism with Chinese characteristics mean? Is Deng genuinely engaged in a gradual process of de-revolutionizing China? What is the significance of Dengs second revolution of the 1980s in comparison with Maos first revolution of the 1950s? What are the sources of support for and resistance against further development of the Dengist model? Moreover, what are the implications of Dengs pragmatism and reforms for the future of China, in particular, and of Marxism-Leninism, in general? Finally, what has been the impact of Dengs reforms on Chinas relations with its neighbors and with the superpowers, and on the redefinition of Chinas role in the world arena? Answers to these questions are essential not only for advancing our own knowledge of Chinas political development and social change, but also for formulating appropriate foreign and economic policies toward China.
Hence, the idea for a conference to examine A Decade of Reform Under Deng Xiaoping was conceived in 1986. The intellectual strength of the Chinese Studies community was mobilized to carry out a comprehensive analysis and assessment of the nature, pattern, and trend of Dengs reforms. With the generous support of the Institute for International Studies at Brown University and the Chinese Studies Program of the Wang Institute of Graduate Studies, a major international academic conference was convened at Brown University during the period of November 47, 1987. The conference brought together sixty leading scholars and senior policymakers from various parts of the world.
