Comparative Cases of Personal Parties in Western Europe
Since the 1970s, hundreds of new political parties have been added to the established party systems of western European and Anglo-American democracies. Many of those parties have since fallen by the wayside, but others have gone on to reach institutionhood. And of course, some of the latter success stories have then met with decay and de-institutionalisation. Among these developments, many have had marked consequences for the functioning and long-term stability of the party systems. Little wonder then, especially considering the simultaneous development (and success and failure) of many new parties in eastern and central Europe, that institutionalisation and its partner, de-institutionalisation, have become timely topics for party research! With this book, we hope to contribute to understanding of both of those topics.
