Media, Security and Sovereignty in the Canadian Arctic
This book documents how the Arctic region has been represented in the media: exploring how the media has framed the Arctic and whether this has an impact on governmental decision-making and public preferences.
The Arctic region faces profound transformations due to global warming, spurring intense debates about economic growth, environmental protection, and socio-cultural development. At the same time, most of humanity will never come face-to-face with the realities of the region: the media represents our only opportunity to learn about what this evolving region stands for. Recognizing that media coverage will tend to focus on specific events and relay specific messages, this book scrutinizes the nature of these messages to figure out how the Arctic region is presented by different media outlets. Studying different types of media, Landriault conducts an analysis of 628 newspaper articles, 110 televised reports, 9 magazine articles, and 404 tweets to provide the first systematic and rigorous study of Arctic media representations.
This book will interest scholars, practitioners, and students in Arctic studies, critical geography, political science, and communication studies.

This book is the result of three years of research and writing. I would first like to thank P. Whitney Lackenbauer, as his public call to provide more rigorous and systematic empirical evidence to support claims in Arctic scholarship represented a major source of inspiration to start this project.
I would also thank colleagues that have contributed their time or shared comments in order for this book to come to fruition: Frdric Bastien, Rob Huebert, Franklyn Griffiths, P. Whitney Lackenbauer, Paul Minard, Elizabeth Elliot-Meisel, and Justin Massie.
Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Rachel, for her unconditional support, understanding and patience. Her insights and comments have been instrumental towards the completion of this book. This book would not have been possible without her.

The Arctic fascinates. Its remoteness and extreme environment have generated fear, speculation, and awe ever since European explorers first set foot in the region. The powerful symbols it generates abound: polar bears, remote communities, and once-thought perpetual ice are but a few examples. These strike the publics imagination and constitute good political resources for Canadian political elites. The Arctics captivating aura also reaches the media where its symbolic resources can be tied to dominant narratives about global phenomenon. For example, a National Geographic video made public in December 2017 showed an emaciated polar bear struggling to survive. The caption opening the video was clear about the causal link inferred: this is what climate change looks like. The magazine claimed that the video illustrated the consequences of climate change on the species, only to backtrack a few months later, stating that the publication did not tell the whole story and that it was impossible to know why the bear was sick (CBC, August 17 2018).
As to be expected, climate change significantly increased this fascination as the region entered a state of flux. Scholars in the social sciences have also been interested in the Arctic for many decades. In Canada, at the centre of this interest lies concerns about Canadas sovereignty. A heavy focus on international law could be discerned with scholars such as Donat Pharand, Donald McRae, Michael Byers, and Suzanne Lalonde producing high-quality scholarship from a legal perspective. On another front, authors such as Franklyn Griffiths, Rob Huebert and P. Whitney Lackenbauer focused on analyzing governmental policies while offering policy advice to Canadian decision-makers on how to best assert Canadian sovereignty over Canadas North.
This book wants to take a different path. International law or policy-advising focuses are crucial and productive; the scholars named above have offered incredible contributions to our understanding of Arctic security and sovereignty. However, specific areas of inquiry have been ignored or marginalized as a result. For one, the media has not been studied seriously, as government and law dominated and still dominates the research agenda. This might come as a surprise, given that Arctic security and sovereignty is an unobtrusive issue, meaning an overwhelming majority of Canadians does not experience this issue in their day-to-day life (Soroka, 2002: p. 268). This characteristic usually makes the media more powerful since they can shape public perceptions about realities that everyday people cannot relate to on their own; the medium represents the sole provider of perceptions.
