Acknowledgments
The development and evolution of Skill Development for Generalist Practice: Exercises for Real-World Application has occurred over the course of more than two decades of teaching undergraduate and beginning graduate social work students the basic knowledge, skills, and values for entering practice. Over those years, the exercises and cases examples have been revised in keeping with the changing nature of practice, but the fundamental mission of teaching students the foundation essential to good practice has remained the same. We want to acknowledge here the many individuals who contributed to this book. First, we want to acknowledge the countless students who taught us about how these exercises work, gave us feedback, and made suggestions to revise and refine them. We also must acknowledge and thank the many clients who taught each of us how to practice social work and inspired many of the circumstances and ideas in the exercises and cases. Finally, we would like to thank our colleagues Tracy Soska and Shaun Eack for sharing their ideas and materials as part of the development of , and the many adjunct faculty, including Dean Leahy and Kathy Connolly, who have taught classes using our book and have made suggestions over the years for refining many of the exercises.
We also want to thank our respective families. From Christina Newhill: I would like to thank my husband and fellow social worker, Dean Leahy, for his input and collaboration on how to most effectively teach beginning students using experiential methods, and my daughters Eva and Tiffany, who were great cheerleaders and supporters but are glad the book is now completed. I also want to thank my late father, Esko E. Newhill, who taught me the hard realities as well as the joys of academic writing.
From Beth Mulvaney: I would like to thank Chris and Jamie Ramsey for their support. They certainly tolerated my working on this book evenings, weekends, and during trips and visits in Evanston over these last couple of yearsthank you! Many thanks to colleague Rafael Engel for his mentorship, guidance, and encouragement to pursue a book project.
From Bobby Simmons: I would like to acknowledge support from my family, Jan, DeMarcus, and Devin, and my friend Tom S. Mead. Special thanks to you, Christina; the lab manual that you started many years ago has been invaluable in helping me teach the next generation of social workers.
Finally, we also want to thank the many wonderful folks at SAGE who supported and guided us through the reviews and revisions that strengthened our book and readied it for publication. These include our first editor, Nathan Davidson; current editor, Joshua Perigo; copy editor, Diana Breti; project editor, Kelle Clarke; and editorial assistant, Noelle Cumberbatch. We gratefully acknowledge the following reviewers for their kind assistance:
